What is this?
This is a forum set up for roleplaying within the Warhammer 40k universe, particularly within the Imperial Guard, with a timeline parallel with the comic Eagle Ordinary. Here you can write, interact with each other and participate in events run by our writers. Things that happen in the comic may or may not influence some of the scripted events here, events that conspire here may or may not affect the comic. You can consider this a roughly parallel universe for all intents and purposes.

How do I get involved?
* Make a post in the barracks and establish your character, check the sticky for post examples.
* Check the various rp areas (On Base, City Limits, Outside the City) for threads and stickies with plot rp
* Start a thread of your own, establish a scene and invite people to join in
* Check the Boot Locker in General for other folks looking to explore a scenario, or suggest one of your own
* Reach out over PM to someone you want to roleplay with

What are the rules?
* Be cool to each other
* Don't be a dick
* Don't do stuff that will get us into legal trouble

Is there anything else I should know?
* This is as serious or as silly as you'd like it to be, but please be considerate of your fellow RPers.
* This is more of a freeform roleplay than Only War or any particular system, but we have a lightweight version of FATE if you desire some structure.
* It's considered bad form to kill or maim another person's character without speaking about it first OOC with each other
* Keep it classy. When exploring adult themes use your personal judgement, and when in doubt, take it to PM.

Do I need to play a guardsmen? Could I play a commissar or a grot or a sister or an astartes or a hive tyrant?
Play what you think would fit into the theme of the area, and use your best judgement. There's always the chance that a dead sneaky grot could sneak in, or a wayward sister might have found her way here, but it's unlikely that an astartes might find his way here without causing a stir, and a hive tyrant would most certainly spell the end of us all. Feel free to ask if you're unsure.

Can I play as/roleplay with a EO character?
The EO characters have been relegated to NPCs, and may very well join in if given the opportunity.

Do you have some sort of system to resolve conflicts and challenges beyond deciding OOC?
Why yes, we have a lightweight version of FATE.

Do I have to make a new account for every character?
Only if you want to!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask myself, web admin and general busybody, or our main storytellers, Richard or Vawn.

I have a question. Is it better to ask to be part of a session with private message or is using the rp thread fine when it isn't specified?

Also hive tyrants are forbiden but what about lictors?
If you are seeing this I didn't die or anything I just figured that because of my unabillity to remain involved regularly for long periods of time I might as well not bother the rest of the forum.

So not sure if this is the right place to ask this.

I haven't played an RPG before ( excluding video games) so I have no idea what the rules are. I am very interested in participating but don't know if it is too difficult catching up to everyone.

Can anyone give me an easy guide to look up?
Much appreciated.

Any thread marked [OPEN] is free game, anything marked [PM TO JOIN] or some variation should need asking first. This one's kind of on you to find out what works best. Might be in the future some threads open to certain 'squads' or whatnot. But for now, designate threads as you feel comfortable if you start one, and when I personally open one, it'll always be open to everyone.

Metal C0Mmander wrote:Also hive tyrants are forbiden but what about lictors?

Depends, how many licts does it take to get to the center of a regiment?

Talancir wrote:probably best to assume that anything that isn't imperial is banned

This is kind of a semi-serious rp. So people can get away with a lot more than imperials. If you want to go with something non-imperial, ask yourself this:
- Will this not disrupt the general flow of narrative in most threads I join?
- Could it contribute to the fun my fellow roleplayers are having?
- Will it be fun for me to play?

If the answer to all of those is probably yes, go for it. If you're unsure, feel free to ask.

Hey Grouch!

So this is primarily a freeform roleplay, which means it's purely narrative. People can write about their characters for fun, and tell something of a cooperative story. Occasionally we'll have plot threads where there's some sort of scenario that needs to be overcome. While we don't require any rulesets to define the outcomes of your actions (you need to decide together with your fellow roleplayers what is narratively compelling and reasonable), we have drafted up a very light version of FATE's ruleset if you want to play around with it. I want to stress that it's not required in the least, though.

Feel free to read more about what it's intended for in its thread, and I'm happy to answer any more questions you have!

I've a (heretical) question: Is it possible to play as xenos, e.g. Tau, and/or to play as their factions? Because it might be cool to have a team of Firewarriors and their human allies jostling about, possibly even encountering a pre-established team of Guardsmen.

Here's a page I found from a forum I used to roleplay on for a brief spell: https://fictiontips.wordpress.com/2014/ ... leplaying/

I've also been doing pen and paper RPGs for a good few years now, and would be happy to give you any tips, if you'd want them (shoot me a PM if you do).

I'm certainly open to it!

But keep in mind the number of IG players, for the moment, significantly outweigh xeno, and they'll probably want you dead! You'll either have to be wily, play in separate threads, or be relatively okay with either being captured or KO'd. (Or some combination of the three)

For character creation is there a general format to follow? i.e.

Name:
Age:
Height:
Weight:

And so on.
Pain is weakness leaving the body. Also, bleeding is weakness leaving the body. Judging by all the blood, you must be really weak.

[Raises hand] What is the preferred format for OOC if a lengthy discussion pops up? Sometimes forums use dedicated OOC threads for longer situations, so I'm just curious.

Also can we run 'couples' if they're not disruptive? (Do talk to others, don't gank folk, just kinda use the dynamic for different commentary, etc)

Greetings everyone.
I am a new arrival here and it will be some time until I can get a hold of who's - who and what's going on in all the current adventure threads.
But I had some time to read many of the players characters and backgrounds and I've thought that I could offer myself to draw those who wish to have a portrait for their little guy/girl. In my experience, rpg players tend to empathize more with fleshed-out characters.

This is not a commission offer nor artistic promotion (since I suck a lot, specially at painting) therefore I'll take time to draw anything you want me to do.
To have an idea of the quality you will get I leave here a sample of my work (anything with color will take me more time):

Have a great time in the name of the Emprah!
Cheers!

Nope, but I'll put one together if it helps! Check the barracks in an hour or so.

Depends, we (the writers and I) aren't terribly uptight about it. I generally will throw in [[brackets]] when I speak out of character, but if you want out of character threads or discussions, please feel free to use general. I can spawn sub-forums if need be too. The Roleplay index where The Boot Locker is stashed and etc is good for roleplay related OOC too, I imagine. We have a loose structure, currently, which I assume will change and grow to accomedate whatever springs up here!

As for couples, I certainly don't mind. As per the rules, we're down with anything so long as it's tasteful and not disruptive to other roleplayers.

You're awesome!!!

Start a thread if you'd like. And I wouldn't wave you off from taking commissions either. When I was in college I made a lot of my fun money through drawing commissioned pieces of folk's OCs in forums.

How many storytellers are allowed?

Do we need an official storyteller to run a scenario or perhaps some other unworthies with access to rule book materials could attempt a campaign?

Anyone can start a thread and run a scenario! We'll occationally have PLOT threads that reflect something in the comic's story or something fun our writers want to share, but I'd encourage anyone who wants to start something up to go for it. We might even join in if we've got the time!

Are we allowed to do a swear?
Or would would censoring and 40K-ised cussing (feth, etc) be preferred?

And awesome! ..my couples are definitely more Statler and Waldorf than romantic, so taste should hopefully not be an issue.

We should all be grown-ups here, so my view on things is the occasional swear is okay, using "in-universe" 40kified cussing is great, but try not to go overboard with the real world swears and heavy stuff like the c-bomb.

It won't be explicitly banned, like if there's a really supercharged scene and a player calls an npc a cunt, then that's fair enough, but someone throwing it around like confetti or aiming it deliberately toward other players will get looked at by the mod team.

As for couples, what Kaiser said above. Keep it tasteful, is it going to be fun for the other players around you to see? If you want to get more private, the forum has a PM system for folks to use, providing both parties consent to it.

Are we allowed to play as commanders? If so, What is the number of troops in our disposal? Captains (in my case) usually have 120 soldiers, or the case is different here, considering the Planetfall was costly?

Based on the comic, most if not all commanders were killed by the tau. However you could play someone who was suddenly promoted to a higher rank. Of course the Gms have the final say. Also, welcome to the party :D

Well, basically: my unit have just arrived to Naris from Krieg as both a reinforcement to the weakening garrison as well as a punishment for me (the Captain) for a reason written in my character description.
I joined the Thread [On Base ->Barracks Inspection!] and my "Introduction" can be found on the 3rd page, If you could tell me if my writing and RP is good enough and the opinion of the Mods on it and my rank I will be eternally grateful!
also: How can I link the said thread or any other so you won't have to search for it manually?

Greetings,

I would be interested in joining though I would like to ask whether or not an Adeptus Arbites member would be allowed from the planetary government or Imperial Navy liaison on the next reinforcement leading a small party of Naval Armsmen as an escort that gets shot down in a random sector sending out a distress signal.

I'm refraining from posting an actual character until I know what can be confirmed or not because what I have in mind is very specific and technically a specialist rank in which there are few of outside of a major theater of war.

- Knight Commander Ordwin Rahl
Strike Commander Marcus Patronia
Second in Command of His Imperial Navy, Heavy Cruiser Vox Machina
57th Scarrus Reconnaissance Wing

You should be fine. I know I'm a sergeant with 5 troopers under me, and Wyss has 120 men overall, so a few navy boys won't be that big a deal. If they can survive outside of their private flats, that is.
