The War Machine of the Cult of Mars

Greetings! This unit, 14-Mu Thyzax, is pleased to provide its expertise on the martial forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus. A general overview of the subject will begin, followed by in-depth analysis and discussion.

The Adeptus Mechanicus, like the other organizations of the the Imperium of Man, maintains its own armies. Thanks to the ancient Treaty of Olympus, in which the Omnissiah-as-Emperor came to Mars and demonstrated His holy touch to our forefathers, the Martian Mechanicum (to use the venerable name held in those days) is granted greater autonomy than other portions of the Imperium. This holds true to matters military as well, and the Mechanicus bears three primary forces, as well as numerous potent auxiliaries.

Legiones Skitarii
Warriors of the Machine God
The Skitarii are the foot soldiers of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Sworn not into the Cult Mechanicus but into their own warrior traditions, the Skitarii wage war in the name of the Omnissiah with incredible zeal. Many major Forge Worlds pattern their Skitarii off of the Martian explorers of prehistory, symbolically replacing their lower legs and issuing the weapons carried for tens of thousands of years. However, there is no mandate to this tradition, and many Skitarii are created in whatever form their Techpriest masters wish them to serve. Led from orbital ships via data-tethers, the Skitarii are willing to take millions of casualties if it gathers them the information they need to defeat their foe: whenever a Skitarius falls, the data-screed is sent to their leadership, ensuring that the proper countermeasures can be brought to bear.

Collegia Titanica
God-Machines of the Titan Legions
The most infamous weapon of the Adeptus Mechanicus is the Titan, a physical incarnation of the Machine-God bestowed upon His most holy servants. Organized into self-sufficient Legions, with their own attendant infantry (the Secutarii) and support forces, the Titans bring the incredible wrath of the Machine God to His enemies across the Imperium. While home-based on a given Forge World, most Titan Legions deploy where the ancient oaths of servitude and alliance require them, or where sufficiently influential members of the Imperium beseech their aid. Even the smallest of the Titans will define any battle, and the most horrifying weapons of the Titanica, such as the Emperor-class and the Psi-Titans, can dominate entire worlds unaided.

Cult Mechanicus Battle Congregations
Disciples of the Machine God
The most eclectic and diverse arm of the Adeptus Mechanicus, Battle Congregations have replaced the ancient Taghmata Omnissiah used so many millennia ago. Fulfilling numerous roles from defense of the Forge World to honoring of treaties and oaths, the Battle Congregation is determined not by tables of mobilization but by complex lines of service and owed fealty. The specialist portions of the Mechanicus, including such varied organizations as the Centurio Ordinatus, the Auxilia Myrmidon, the Ordo Reductor, and the Legio Cybernetica make their appearances here, and their roles will be further explained in this portion.

In following elements, a more specific discussion of each of these branches and their compositions will be held.

Ugh. Even the residual of that was painful. Damn ...

Okay. Now that we've gotten out of the way, I'd like to explain the most fundamental gift of the Machine God: The Noosphere.

The Noospheric interface was gifted to Archmagos Koriel Zeth in the final years of the Great Crusade. Its initial implementation just prior to the Schism of Mars proved beneficial for those that remained loyal to Terra and the Omnissiah. It was discovered that the Noospheric Interface was incompatible with the scrapcode attack unleashed from the Vaults of Moravec by the Archtraitors Kelbor-Hal and Regulus. This enabled the loyalists to rally and, after the defeat of Horus, to drive the Dark Mechanicum from Mars and bring unity back to the Forges of the Machine God.

This will be sufficient for an overview. Now, what does this mean for you, dear friend? Well, the Noosphere is, at its most basic explanation, augmented reality. Not unlike Google Glass, but so much more so. The Noosphere provides the priesthood with a comprehensive list of information regarding the things we see. Take me, for instance. There might not be much you can glean from my physical appearance, other than that I have a few obvious implants (no, not those) and I have hidden a lot of cybernetics underneath my robes. Now, supplement what you see with Noospheric vision and - wait, look away for a moment, and then glance back on me.

Cool, isn't it? That haze you see around me is what we refer to as a Noospheric Aura. It is the unfocused conglomeration of knowledge that defines me as a Tech-Priest. It crackles and seethes with some of the more important information and processes, but for the most part, it's a glowing haze.

Now look deeper. As you do, that unfocused haze will coalesce into packets of information, each containing some aspect of what makes me, me. The specifications of my augmentation, my name and my rank, my accolades and accomplishments, all are laid bare for the discerning mind and uploaded as fast and as much as one can process. Look even closer and you might even see different spools of hexamathic calculations, being worked on by one of my several mental partitions.

It's a brilliant illumination of knowledge. All beings have such a Noospheric Aura when seen with the Interface. Some are more complicated than others, of course. The sheer illumination that spills from an Archmagos is beyond words, while the Aura that surrounds the unaugmented are mundane by comparison. It's as though the colors of their being is as unremarkable as dirt, and as vivid as murky water.

This also explains the approach to our aesthetics in design. Which is to say, it's largely nonexistant, and built entirely on form and function. Simply put, we find the austentation that is so prevalent in Imperial design to be unnecessary, especially when seen through the Noospheric Interface. What can truly compare to the torrent of information and knowledge that defines the physical? Knowledge is the very definition of our existence. Without it, we are children grasping at straws.

As all members of the priesthood are connected via the Noosphere, it is also the primary way in which we share information. Sort of like a persistent wi-fi cloud. I can show you what open sourced calculations I'm working on and you can examine, comment or edit as permissions allow. There are of course limits to what information we can share when distance is a factor, but for the most part, it connects us all in ways that those outside the Cult Mechanicus cannot even begin to comprehend.

The interaction of the bridge crew aboard the Ark Mechanicus ship Speranza of the Kotov Expedition is an adequate example of the basic operations of the Noosphere. Please refer to Priests of Mars by Graham McNeill, Macrocontent 001, Microcontent 06.

SELECTED: DENTRICA I OF II
ENGAGE NEURAL CONGRESS---WIRELESS AUTOSHUNT AQUIRED
UPLOADING... +A FEUD OF FAITH+

None within the imperium knock heads more than the AdMech and the munistorum. Though they share a deity, the more zealous members of the creed view the AdMech as heretics.
What protects the AdMech from attack however are several treaties that date back to the infant days of the great crusade, for most among them is the one which allows them to exist autonomously from the wider imperium.
This as one could imagine, pisses some off. The inquisition out right distrusts them, and is trying to decode Lingua techna, the official language of the AdMech, to prevent another great schism from happening. However, Lingua Techna is difficult to decode as it contains references and terms that only a priest would understand.
