Vayne blinked at the other for a moment, before he laughed, grabbing the board and clipping the top in- now standing on the other side of the door as they finished assembling it. He glanced at Cat through the small gap that was left, a knowing smirk on his lips. He paused for a moment for Yorke to really soak in his expression, before he snapped the last wooden piece into place, obscuring himself from view.

At least until he slid the door open, looking down at the Commissar who was still kneeling on the other side of the washroom door.

"I'll keep that in mind, sir," Cassius chuckled, obscuring his fluster with flirtatious banter as he stepped over the other- since Yorke was effectively barricading the narrow entryway with his body- and made his way back to his desk to settle in for the rest of the day.

"Hey now, I didn't ask for a showcase." Cat laughed as he looked up, the other climbing over him causing a slight startle.
He straightened up and swatted Vayne's rear as the corporal retreated, "Not at the moment anyhow."
Rolling his neck, he cleared away the scattered tools, and pondered where the extra screws had come from before dropping them in to a wastepaper basket by his desk with a shrug.

Rolling his sleeves back down, Cat strolled over to his desk, picking up his cap. Still in an unreadable mood, he held it in the air in front of him, and tilting his head from side to side, wandered back, placing the cap on Vayne's head with an expression of mischief.
Leaning back the edge of the desk, Yorke chuckled, "Suits you, sir."
Finally done bothering his aide, Ray left it in place on the redhead and returned to his desk, dropping casually into his seat.

He sat quietly for a moment, trying to settle, before giving up and pushing his chair back from the table again, "Look, you've been honest with me, far more than I've ever asked. And I repaid you by being insensitive has hell. Talking about your people like you weren't even here. I was just so caught in being angry..." he exhaled tiredly, "I don't know if you'd believe me if I said that I understand how you feel. But I hope you would."

The swat earned Ray a bright and surprised peal of laughter, and Cassius shot the Commissar a scandalized stare over this shoulder. There wasn't any anger behind the look, only mild amusement mixed with an undertone of hesitance. Had he yelped? Maybe a little, the slap to the rear wasn't expected, despite his saucy climb over the elder man on the floor.

That kind of stung, maybe you should ki- the Corporal bit his tongue, hoping to the Throne above he hadn't voiced that particularly sassy retort. How very inappropriate and quickly that would have shifted their already questionable relationship into dangerous territory.

Vayne didn't expect Cat to put the hat on his head, however. He bit his lip a little in restless bewilderment as Yorke appraised him. Was it just him or did the office feel a bit stuffy all of a sudden?

"You think so?" He murmured, reaching up to fix the cap on his head so that it felt less out of place, before giving Yorke a 'tip of the hat' grinning a little. Attempting to relax into his own chair, Vayne set his feet up on the corner of his own desk, looking over at the Commissar as he spoke, carding his own hands over his stomach.

"Water under the bridge, Ray... I wasn't deaf to everything else that was mentioned..." Cassius looked down while removing the commissariat cap, it suddenly felt so much more heavy on his brow. Holding it in his lap, he traced over the metal aquila with his bare fingertips. How much burden had this one hat overseen? He couldn't fathom such loss in the way of hundreds of forms... Yorke was right, he wouldn't know the loss of his people for a lack of them, but given a solid reminder like those binders seemed almost more painful to behold.

The thought certainly made Vayne feel foolish, he wasn't the only one who suffered from acute loss. His was only more recent. Shame flushed his face as he stared at the cap. A passing thought reminded him that he should probably apologize to Makarov for his angry outburst... She simply had tried to soothe the ache with what she knew best. Zoya was certainly less socially graceful than Yorke- but both of them were by-products of war; expecting her to act differently was foolish. She wasn't the cause of it and his ire towards her had been misplaced.

"I should go speak with Makarov while she still has her office hours. I think I owe her an apology..."

Oh, he thinks I'm still trying to apologise- Ray realised that Cassis wasn't a mind reader, "Ah. I meant that like you, I know what it's like, losing your home and family to the Imp- having it taken at the behest of some large- I'm not- I meant there's-" Cat rubbed his eyes with his real hand, at the jump to speaking to Makarov. Any willingness to explain his history sputtered out. Another time. It's hard enough, already.

"I'm... So proud that you have reached the point where actively apologising is important to you." he smiled weakly.

"But Makarov? After that whole episode where she helped Aesteban write us up? You offended her?" Cat blinked, concerned, "I- If those charges had stuck, I'd be hanging by my neck from the fuckin spire right now, and you'd be reassigned as an ammo grunt or front line meat-shield. Both of us as dead as each other, through Makarov valuing protocol over quite how hard DiMettrio was trying to knife us."

He exhaled through his nose tiredly, playfulness evaporated, "This is what I meant about real power of commissars; It's through the grace of Holt that you and I still breathe this air, Cassius... If you can speak with Zoya, you're doing better than me right now. The best I can manage is to avoid contact." he shook his head, "...I don't want my mouth to fuck up your chances. And it would."

A thought occurred to Cat, as the faint scent of disinfectant still clung to his hands. Reaching around the back of his chair, into his coat pockets, Cat fished out his leather gloves and placed them on the end of his desk, "Here. My hands are a bit larger... Sorry they're not as well kept as they could be." a concession that while he didn't want to get involved, he wouldn't block Vayne from leaving, nor warn him not to.
Even after an especially confusing morning, he was definitely not Cassius' parent, after all.

Vayne stared at Cat over his desk before he set the other's hat down, leaning forward and looking a little bit hurt at what the other said. Or rather, explained to him so succinctly. As though he hadn't been paying attention at all.

"If you think I wasn't aware of their little paperwork ploy given that meeting with Holt, maybe you think I'm a whole lot more ignorant than you seem to make me feel," Cassius hissed, quite offended that the Commissar was making it seem like he simply skipped along and ignored the threats.

"Yeah, I'm a little angry because that was a real bitch move on both their parts- Especially since we haven't actually done anything to them. But we can't just stop the rumour mill from running away again without rousing suspicion- And we both know Holt already sees through Aesteban's bullshit. He's practically ordered you to ride his arse around until he uncovers the actual threat."

"Makarov stopped by to bring you sweets when you were drugged up in medicae, and it was a nice gesture, Ray. But after my conversation with her I'm pretty convinced she has the social grace of a tank. She only knew how to follow those instructions- protocols, whatever you want to call them. She wasn't thinking about your or my safety, she simply saw a problem and it was in her whatever Commissariat training to stamp it out." The redhead was frustrated, and also a little scared.

"I really don't think it's entirely her fault if Aesteban was behind it, we both know what a little shitheel he can be... Enough fabricated information and it'd set off her sirens to go fix things. Even if they didn't need fixing in the first place."

"She might not deserve my apology any more than I deserve hers, but I shouldn't have lost my temper. I sort of went off on her with some... Patriotic rant about Valmaria... If she has anything to level at me now with enough prodding, is that I could potentially be a dissident. Because I was passionate about my people and disapproving of the Guard's methods. I need to put any thought of that to bed. She needs to understand that my loyalty is unerringly to the Imperium, nomatter how brutal or ridiculous its ways. That's why I'm with the Mechanized Unit now. My old unit already had a target painted on their backs, just by association to the PDF."

"I shouldn't let a grudge burn a bridge that I can mend... And maybe build on. Strategically," He said softly, looking defeated and frustrated that it'd come to this. After the whole treason incident, Cassius wasn't particularly keen on interacting with either of their accusers, but he saw it as a necessary evil.

"Woah now." Cat looked a little taken aback, but then scowled, and held his hands out, "I have never thought that you were ignorant, nor clueless! I wouldn't waste my time with someone I didn't see as at least my equal! And Throne knows you are far smarter than I am at this!" it was a strange thing to angrily tell someone you admired them, but apparently the commissar was capable.

Breathing deeply, he formed the next few sentences before he opened his mouth again, "I just... I was scared... That entire thing was so far beyond my control. I said I'd protect you, but I cannot protect you from the other monsters. Not alone." the scowl had since faded away to an expression of concern.
Unsure of how angry Vayne was, or how patronising he had been, Cat felt ashamed, "I don't say these things to inflate your ego, Cassius; I don't give empty praise to the undeserving. If I was intoning that you're anything but competent, then I'm sorry. It's never been on my mind." he bowed his head, clearly uncomfortable.

At Vayne's comment about social grace, Ray's eyes had drifted to the basket on the shelf. He turned again musing, "I did wonder. I'm sure she thought it was the sort of kind thing people do..." he rubbed his eyes again, realising exactly how callous he sounded, "Zoya isn't a bad person, we both know that. But we also know the extent of her training and schola indoctrination is bone-deep. I'm not entirely certain she knows how to socialise beyond emulating other people's kindness and hoping it has a positive result."

A definite tiredness emerged on Cat's face, rather than pitying expression, "I've seen the effect of the schola upon so many of my peers." he shook his head, "It either breaks people down and rebuilds them like that, or breaks them in other ways... So I can't fully blame her for her actions. But I can be angry at them for a while, whatever her intention was."

Cat tapped his finger to his lips, considering again how to continue. Calmly, "Knowing that, I guess I took it all more personally than I should... I went to see Makarov before I handed myself in. I wanted her to know the whole truth of the edited file. I had no clue that she was already involved with Aesteban. Because the correct course of action for her - ignoring social and emotional complications - the law to the letter, was to see Imperial justice done."

He smiled, weary, "That's why I'm staying out of that minefield. But you have the understanding of how to speak to people. I trust you to tread where I haven't got the grace to yet." he glanced at the doorway, "And perhaps if she grows to see you as the more reasonable man, then that is no bad thing. And you can certainly depend on her in some areas."

"That's certainly the point...," Vayne replied, looking less tense at the other's sincerity. If he appeared to be more capable of making his own decisions, Makarov would have no reason to believe that Yorke was still 'sheltering' him... As much as he was the Commissar's aide, he also surely possessed his own ambitions and competencies. Cat had trusted him with full authority of the office in his absence, and that had to translate somehow.

"We need more allies than enemies right now, and I'll be honest, Ray... If the Commissariat holds that much power over the lives of everyone involved, having another Commissar understanding our cause will help immeasurably," Cassius ventured gently, he didn't want to worry Yorke further. "Relying on only the Guardsmen to vouch for me, or you, in the future will fall on deaf ears eventually. I'll need that Commissariat vote, too."

Ray gave a pointed shrug, "Commissariat power isn't straight forward. Think of it as dogs and cattle. The dog calls the shots, protects and steers the herd. They can even kill the odd cow if their sickness or behaviour endangers the herd... But without any cattle, and if the entire herd turns, the dog is useless." he realised it wasn't a brilliant analogy, but a working one, "Commissars need guardsmen to comply and to support their decisions. Especially in situations like we have on base. You, as an articulate influencer of your comrades, you hold some of the power as well. An intelligent officer would fear that."

Rubbing his nose and gazing at the ceiling, Cat mused, "Or is that me promoting the notion of minor dissidence? Couldn't be."
He lowered his gaze and smiled, before reaching and arm forward, "Whatever it is... Claws away, now, kitten. Time for soft gloves." he held the pair out to Cassius.

"... I'm hoping that nickname doesn't stick, it doesn't exactly foster confidence..." Vayne trailed off, giving Yorke an odd look.

"Or unwanted implications," he added with a slight smirk as he took the offered gloves and pulled them on to cover the bandages.

"But that's a fair point. I guess we'll see where the pieces fall when they do... Thanks, Ray."

Yorke chuckled, "Maybe I'll just keep that one for when I really want your attention, then." he snapped his fingers quietly in demonstration, amusement dancing on his features.

"You go, I'll close up here. Get out early and rest up if you're able, tomorrow could be a very long day." the commissar was unsure quite how tiring Luca and Cassius would find the Katavarian training. But hopefully it would be the good, honest kind of tired.

(( Cat is done for the day here, after SR departs, office is now open to any visitors, assume scenes to be set after Err is Human. ))

Vayne drew the cuff of his borrowed gloves down to look at his wrist chrono, checking the time.

"Yeah... I have to get to their training grounds bright and early after morning bell... Shan't be late and make a bad impression." Cassius smiled a little at the Commissar before he collected his things to depart, fixing his sleeves and pulling his jacket back on.

"I'll see you later," he smiled, giving Yorke a half wave instead of a salute as he slipped out the door.

Cat wasn't sure where to go. He was in bright spirits, but with the concussion leaving a drunken edge to his thoughts, the commissar was less than certain what to do with himself. Still caked in blood and most of it xeno, he had also been ordered to shower.

I said I'd stay where someone could keep an eye on me. He hummed, realising that meant imposing on either Gaz, or Cassius. Cassius was less likely to give him a lecture. Hopefully.
Something in Cat still wanted the almost paternal company of Gaskell, his captain, but he had no idea where Gaz was at this time of day. Roaming around was a good way to get dragged into something else, so the commissar nodded and suggested that he head back to his office.

*

Padding cheerfully down the corridor, Yorke began to realise quite how tired he was. Less waltzing and more traipsing, he passed into the open office doorway, and made a conscious effort to pull it closed behind him. He stood dumbly trying to fathom the pull cord for the blind after fumbling to lock the door.

"Mission was a success," Cat explained to the door, avoiding showing his aide his face just yet, "PDF got there first but they teamed up with us against rebels, and will later return our share of the wagon. Handed over a sentinel walker they recovered, which is a huge boost!"
The blinds outwitted him, "Fuck." frustrated, Cat gave up and threw the cord back at the wall, where it clacked ineffectively and harmlessly.
"I don't feel- there was a Kroot ambush..." Ray mumbled and giving up, turned to face Cassius, "....Please don't laugh."

The empty desk was unsurprisingly less than talkative in response.
"...Oh." Yorke stepped to the desk. Knowing Vayne was unlikely to have simply abandoned his post, Cat looked for signs of where his aide had gone to, pushing down the flush of disappointment he felt.
Since leaving the forest, he had been looking forward to making it back and sharing the success with his friend... Combined with residual confusing emotions over the conversations of the last few days. All of it was rather foggy, and the commissar simply knew at this moment he missed the other's company.

But Cat also accepted that cleaning himself up and following the medical advice was a good idea, and meant that he would look a lot less shambolic.
"Guess I should shower and stop making the place look untidy." he mumbled and headed into the small washroom.

Luca had tailed Cat most of the way home, keeping him within view. He had the Commissar's medicine and the note on what to take at what times, pretty sure Vayne would need that. So quietly Luca followed the drugged and tired Commissar, letting the man head into the shower Luca slipped inside and started to place the medicine out on Vayne's desk. He put the note from the sister out as well hoping Vayne would notice all of it and make sure Cat took the pills as ordered.

After laying out the medicine Luca pulled a chair near the door and sat back feeling a little weird without his knife he picked up a pen and spun it between his hands quickly not even thinking since it didn't have a point like what he usually spun idly in his gloved hand. He kept his gave fixed on the front door knowing Cat would want privacy and more importantly he didn't want to impose on the officer, even if was one he found himself happy to be around.

luca would not have to wait long until someone arrived, heavy footfalls reverberated though the walls before there was a short and sharp knock on the door.

there was a pause before another series of knocks followed by a raised voice "yorke! open up, i know you're in there."

Luca didn't jump he just sat down the pencil and got up moving towards the door he opened it and then stepped into the door frame. He looked a bit imposing in his black carapace and with the glowing green eyes of his helmet. He snapped a salute to the sergeant before he spoke remaining at attention as he spoke calmly through the speakers in his helmet. "Commissar Yorke is in the shower. He was injured and has orders to rest from the doctors at the medicae." The bulky Corporal with the polished brass answered.

"I'm not his aide but I am watching him making sure he gets his rest, taking his meds, and such things." He added knowing she'd probably want his rank, regiment, and name. "I'm Corporal Astora, Lucifer Blacks third regiment." He added giving her all the information he felt she needed.

Behind Luca, the sound of running water and fairly up-tempo singing in another language, signalled that Yorke was indeed doing something in the bathroom.

Marida just started blankly at lucas' face, her expression unreadable as she processed both that he was even there and what he had said

"tch..of course he got himself injured again... then i'll wait" she muttered to herself while entering the room, focusing her attention back onto the lucifer black once and ignoring the singing coming from the bathroom.

"Beckett. Sargeant. Marida. Beckett." the Sargeant replied coldly to lucas' introduction, tacking on a 'never heard of them' absentmindedly in regards to the regiment he was from, "so if you're not his fulltime babysitter then who exactly are you? do you do anything of worth or just stand in the background looking pretty?"

After a few moments the sounds of water and occasional bumping of things against tiles died down, followed by some muffled noises. Cat toweled himself off, sorted a bandage, and bundled up the contaminated clothing into a laundry bag. That was going to be an interesting conversation later.

Or an interesting conversation now, as he realised that there was not an excess of spare clothing in the office.
Sighing softly, Yorke pulled the eyepatch back on, secured a black and gold towel around his waist, and rather sheepishly pulled the bathroom door open, "Sorry Luca, I'm going to have to ask you to take my keys and fetch me a spare uniform. They're in my coat-"

Cat looked from Luca to Marida, back to himself in the towel, then to the pair again. His mouth opened very slightly, as he slowly tried and failed to form words.
Lightly biting the tip of his tongue, the commissar leaned his head back and gazed at the bathroom ceiling for a moment, trying to work out quite what personal slight he had performed to the Emperor in the short time he'd occupied the shower.

Yorke dripped silently for a few seconds, the cleaned metal glinting on his bionic arm, and at least one other place it usually wouldn't.
While daily PT for months had achieved an impressive physical outcome, the faded, embarrassingly moto chest tattoo combined with the Inquisitorial seal inscribed into his stomach, resulted much the same effect as a sports car that someone had gently backed into a gatepost.

"Sergeant Beckett? Can I interest you in a recaff?" possessing no other point of reference, or an embarrassment gene, Yorke took the line of hospitality, "Cocoa?"

"I'm a bodyguard, usually my job is to protect officers that go off base, it was part of my training on Terra." Luca added moving back into the room letting Marida answer. "When I'm not guarding officers I'm just another trooper here to serve and die with my fellow guardsmen." He answered her simply, deciding he did not want to anger her further.

When the Commissar stepped out in just a towel Luca decided not to chuckle out loud... He did, however, turn off his speaker and chuckle within the confines of his helmet. Flicking it back on a second later. "Give me the key sir, I'll go get it." Luca gave a slightly tired sigh but happy to leave the room which had gotten a bit awkward.

if luca had any faint hope that his job role and origins would impress or placate the veteran deathworlder, then he would've been disappointed "so just a glorified minder-come-ornament from the throne world, how wonderful, just the thing we need to turn this shitshow around."

when yorke made his presence in the room known, the sargeants eyes flickered over, idly gazing over the tattoo and inquisitorial seal for a second before looking the commissar square in the eyes, having no interest in what the markings alluded to Marida cut the chase

"spare me the pleasantries Yorke, i find them patronising and a waste of time, what i'm here for is an explanation." she began, not really caring or waiting to see if luca had left "given my upbringing i am more than aware that our situation is delicate along with the compromises that have to made in order to best utilize what resources we have, and i put up with a lot because of that. But twice now i have loaned out a subordinate to you on short notice, which in the most recent instance necessitated a restructure of my planned patrols and scouting haunts, and on both occassions said subordinate wa sloaned out they came back damaged and with little to show for it. As of consequence my patrols have to be restructured further as a mount sustained injury and as such will be out of commission for a while. so given that and in spite of my personal opinions i gave you a vote of confidence when pressed about your conduct pertaining to accusations made by a clerk suffering a mental breakdown, enlighten me, what the hell are you playing at?"
