It was the smell that hit you first, this pungent odor like a Grox being overcooked on fire for 3 weeks combined with a fine coat of Rust, burnt unguent, axle grease and fumes of spent Promethium fuel. But it was no such bouquet of foul putrescence; these were the remains of the late Ryzan Mechanicus Contingent of Valmaria that were responsible for the pre-fire Motor Pool, as well as the priceless inventory of Imperial war machines. It was the first thing one noticed when entering the motorpool, and no amount of burial, Rite of Purification or Air Fresher could remove that disgusting stench, so it stayed there as a constant reminder to the faults of untested practices.

Welcome to the Motor Pool of Naris, now under new management.

The facility was a modest plot of land, taking up a single five hundred meter hex in the garrison. With the extensive loss of material and vehicle, space was still at a premium: Even more than before in fact now that there are significantly less constrictions like walls or other silly notions of the like; once its remains will be cleared that is. But even so, there was never enough of space when it comes to Imperial vehicles. Inevitably, the most combat capable vehicles weren't parked in the motor pool at all, but rather deployed around the base either on duty or even in their regiment's Barracks. Some even served as their depleted regiments as barracks. Other Vehicles that needn't be ready for immediate deployments were parked close to the exits, and ones with increasing levels of damage and disrepair were progressively parked further back into the facility, until all that you encountered were carbonized remains and metal scrap.

The post-fire Motor Pool was still a hive of activity: Guardsmen and operators from various regiments attended to their vehicles under the watchful eyes of their Enginseers, while Sergeants and officers negotiated and heckled each other over scarce supplies or the ministrations of the more capable Tech Priests. All in all, it was carefully organised anarchy, ready to burst at any second.

There's a lot of work here to be done, but not enough hands. Though 'Tis good there are plenty of Mechanendrites.

Above the motor pool a transport ship descended through the clouds. Unlike most imperial transport ships, it is designed with absolutely zero thought into ascetics.
As the ship got closer to the ground, markings on the sides became visible. To the average guardsman the marking were meaningless; to the local techpriests and skitarii guard however, this signified the transport as belonging to the near by Forge World known as Eon.

The flying blue brick touched down just inside the perimeter of the motor pool, well away from any vehicles or construction. From a side hatch three figures disembarked.
Two of the figures can be identified as skitarii rangers, each equipped with standard battle rattle but deviated from normal skitarii in that the overcoats they wore were a striking blue color . The third stood out from the two, armor looking more ornate but no less functional. The third figure motioned to the two rangers and both reembarked the ship.
A minute later the ramp lowered and 9 skitarii rangers martched off the ship to join their leader.

Chirigus stood near the landing pads of the Forge Temple, testing the new flight system he had installed into his Cherubim Micheal. The poor thing had been damaged badly when he had reclaimed him from Saint Selene Asylum, and in his oftentimes fleeting spare time, he would try and repair the small servitor. The cleaning had been the easiest, a simple wash and buffing, and the filthering of his internal fluids had given Micheal a new look. But the parts needed were far and few, so it had been taking longer than he hoped.

But now the small cherubim was able to soar freely and stabile. It was then he heard an approaching air craft. Sending the command to return, he faced the landing ship and watched as it's occupants disembarked. Two Skitarii and what he believed was their controller.

"Strange. I didn't know we were expecting any new priest. Parts would have been more welcome." he thought as the newcomers looked around. Lowering his legs to be a more human height, he approached the group as Micheal floated beside him. As he got with in ear shot, he spoke out in binary and made the Cog.

+Hello, fellow Priest of the of the Omnissiah. I am Artis-...Enginseer Chirigus Alexander Eugenios Theocritus, of Gylius. I was inward we were to expect and new member. May I ask who you are, and what brings you here?+

++all units, prepare to disembark. Rangers++
At the order, 29 more skitarii exited the craft in a loose formation. The squads lined up, each on opposite sides of the ramp (left/right) save for the 9 whom formed up around the Alpha Primus.
Victro at this point, noticed the approaching tech priest.
++Form up++ he broadcasted to his cadre over the noosphere. Instantly each skitarii in line took a formal at ready stance.
++engineseer++ he bowed slightly. ++I am Ranger Alpha Primus Victro-99-Kantus, leader of the 1st cohort of Forge world Eon.++ he stated, as his unit formed up behind him.
++Ironstriders, disembark++ and two towering walkers strode out of the transport as a leisurely pace and took up positions similar to the 20 skitarii.
++I am here on behalf of the fabricator general of Forge World Eon. We are here as a promise of support.++ he motions to the large brick shaped transports various insignias.
++I trust housing is available to accommodate my maniple++ he said gesturing to the rangers and ironstriders.
++Onager, disembark.++thunk, thunk, thunk from the ship the imposing form of an Onager Dunecrawler exited, leaving holes in the dirt as it passes.
++how may I assist, engineseer?++

Without eyebrows, techpriest had difficulty showing expression. Chirirgus was surprised by the sudden arrival of an entire Cohort of Skitarii. The venerable warriors of the Omnissiah. It was a shock that troops would arrive this late into the war, but a gift was always welcome.

+Of course. We have many empty spaces where your cohort can stay. And I just wished to extend a welcome to you+

The Primus chuckles. ++this force is hardly a cohort, honored engineseer. more or less it is a... Reconnaissance maniple. Though the rest of my cohort is still on Eon, they are ready to make the journey-++ the Primus stops for a millisecond to take in the sight of the damaged motor pool.

++Ranger Dell-4/10, to me.the Primus said over the noosphere, eyes locking on the aforementioned ranger.
The ranger approaches Victro salutes, and says ++yes, my Primus?++
++Ranger Dell 4/10, I would have you explore the base. Report anything worthy of note.
The ranger slackens slightly. ++It shall be done, my Primus. the ranger takes his leave. Once out of earshot, the ranger sighs and continues forward.
"Why am I always the one who has to this?" He says to no one in particular.

The Forge-Temple was certainly a curious sight. Owing to the needs of the Machine, many vehicle crews from various regiments had found themselves partially at the mercy of the Tech-Priests' scheduling demands. In the short term, this made up for the shortfall of serfs needed to work the manufactorum, until a more permanent workforce could be accumulated and trained. The majority of the workforce came from the Syenian Guardsmen, themselves no strangers to labouring on behalf of the Machine.

A delegation of said Syenians made procession toward the new arrivals. At the head, a tech-priest swayed on mechadendrite legs, swinging a censer in semi-circular arcs. What could be seen of his face was wizened, his long white mustache dropping down his front. At his side, an officer of the Castor Lancers strode with him, her helmet cradled in the crook of an arm.

Presently, the procession of figures stopped before the Skitarii Primus. The tech priest raised his hands, and unseen, the Forge-Temple's great brass bell tolled. The priest's lips moved not, his voice being emitted from a vox speaker on an iron-wrought gorget.

"Blessed be the Omnissiah and His servants. Blessed be the workings of the Machine, and the soldiers in His service. May his work be done here as on Terra and Mars. Welcome to Valmaria, Skitarii of Eon. I am Magos Stoikos."

The Victro saw figures approach from the distance, immediately he recognized the lead figure as the Magos of this motorpool.
"I am at your command, honored Magos." The Primus said with a fist to his chest and a bow. To the trained ear, the voice was synthetic in nature; barely distinguishable from a real voice.
"My maniple is ready-" he stopped for one second before resuming "-to preform its duties, should they be required."
The Primus was silent for a moment.
"My ranger is under attack by a… what in the name of… a pony." This will be an interesting venture, thought the Primus.

"A pony, you say?" Vasily's eyes slid to the side as he consulted the Noosphere, then glanced back at Victro. "Ah yes. There were a series of paddocks established for the Rough Rider regiments in garrison. Fantastic specimens. As to your maniple, I have no doubt that the Omnissiah will be pleased with your performance."

Off to the side, one of the delegation separated herself from the crowd and made her way toward the disembarked Onager Dunecrawler. Her cybernetic legs were actually legs at all; transhuman perspective tended towards function and application without the hindrances of familiarity, so her legs were in fact a second pair of arms. She used her Tool-Axe as a walking staff as she came forward, admiring the quality.

"Shiny!" Enginseer Adept Alexia exclaimed.

((I just brushed up on Skitarii fluff, and apparently the "Victro-99" part is a title of sorts and "Kantus" would be the name. Also being in the vanguard sucks and infiltrators are fucking scary.)))

++Honored Magos, our transport ship carries an important cargo and must be protected. Where about may I store such?++ The Primus stated in binaric cant casting an unseen suspicous glance at the guardsmen.
++no offense to your unit, but do notI give my trust to those outside the priesthood sparingly++
++I nor my maniple will be around often enough to safely protect such, the Hunts demand such++

"Shiny!" Enginseer Adept Alexia exclaimed.

Had the Primus not been in a formal state, he would have gone on a tirade on how the onagers of the second macroclade* are the finest of any. Proudly boasting his accomplishments to the engineseer.
++indeed it is.++ he said with a hint of pride.

*a macroclade is made up of 4 war cohorts. The first macroclade usually houses the forge worlds titan legion.

Natalia Pelwyn's nostrils flared, and her purple eyes flashed at this affront. She allowed elements of her honorifics to come to the fore of her Noospheric Aura, emitted a growl of binharic code, and responded in perfect Lingua-Technis.

++Statement: Assumptions without facts are inherently flawed. How dare--++

Magos Stoikos held up a hand, and turned toward her. "Peace, Lochagos. Recall the old teachings; he is grieved by your presence. Should we not recall our mutual love for the Machine God and the Omnissiah? We cannot let our brethren stumble for the sake of pride."

Mollified, Natalia clicked her boots together, made the sign of the cog across her chest, then departed with the rest of the Syenian guardsmen. Magos Stoikos turned his attention back to Victro-99. "It will take 12 hours to adjust the itinerary to allow for optimal escort and storage of these holy machines, but there are certain of the priesthood available to begin the procedure immediately."

"Yes yes yes, I know just the place to put the shinies," Adept Alexia replied.

The Primus straightens, ++I apologize if any offense was taken, honored priest, but the contents of the transport is more important than me or my troopers.++ the Primus stated back in binary, letting lose some of his own information into his noospheric aura.
++Survival is nothing, data is all. That is the creed of the skitarii; and the contents of that transport is a cogitator that contains all the data that has been, and will be collected. If it were to be tampered with, the data corrupted, the whole of the data banks of Eon could be erased. highly unlikely as that is, I will not take that chance.++ the Primus said, casting a glance at the ship.
++as to the vehicles themselves, they may be put into storage whenever possible. I do not wish to impose.++

A large convoy of Chimeras bookended with Hellhounds and escorting a Wyvern mortar in their midst rumbles up to the motor pool from the direction of the spaceport. They roll to a stop short of the motor pool gate as the lead Chimera pulls forward and sideways to allow the ramp to clang down in view of the gate. From the rear emerges an officer wearing the bars of a company captain and a Tech-Priest, the color of her robes indicating the rank of full Enginseer. Behind them files a squad of Guardsmen, fanning out to stand at parade rest around their vehicle.

Captain Connor takes in the fire damage to the area with a low whistle before looking around for anyone seeming to be in charge of the motor pool or at least minding the door.

No doubt you will be able to integrate your maniple into the patrol and mission perameters of the garrison in optimal time. March in glory, Primus Victro-99-Kantus.++ The Tech-priest bowed.

Enginseer Adept Alexia capered about in front of the Dunewalker. "Come with me, come with me, my pretty, I'll take you where you need to go, my shiny!"

Guardsmen of every rank and technical skill went about their jobs, or parted to let the captain and the Tech-Priest through the motorpool. They didn't have to wait long. A tall, stately woman, resplendent in the senior officer's uniform of a Lochagos, stood with an assortment of aides, subalterns and specialists. She held an unwavering, purple eyed gaze on the captain as he made his way into the motorpool. Her hands were folded in front of her breastplate, and a pair of servo skulls floated above her like cherubs.

"You are known to me, Captain David Connor of the Aprior Twenty Fourth Mechanized," the woman said without preamble.

Captain Connor made the sign of the Aquila. "Hail, tech-priest. If I am known to you, then you know of the need of my command. I was informed during our drop that berths for our vehicles may be sparse and we are prepared to bivouac in the field if needs be, but I thought it best to check in."

"Subplot: The Treads of the Guard"
"Not in the field," the woman said. She held out a hand to the Captain. "Lochagos Natalia Pelwyn, Commanding Officer of Alpha Company, 22/366th Castor Lancers. A pleasure to meet you, finally." She glanced at the motorpool. "The majority of these vehicles belong to the Cadian 58th Mechanized 'Carnodons,' along with a smattering of vehicles belonging to the other regiments. As you can see, they are in various states of repair. Space is at a premium.

"But on to lesser known information." Natalia turned to the techpriest accompanying Captain Connor. ++I require an upload of your regiment vehicular manifest and loadout.++ "I will need to verify your loadout. The garrison is cut off from the main Munitorum supply chain, and the Rogue Trader hasn't been as forthcoming in answering our logistics requests. We may need to destribute some of your supplies to the other vehicles throughout the garrison."

Soldiers Of The Machine God

++Before you go, may I ask who would be the highest ranking Skitarius currently located in the premises? I would wish to speak with them.++ Kantus asked the kindly priest. The Dunecrawler slowly moved forward, following the eccentric priest to wherever she would take it and the crew. The skitarius that mans the heavy stubber turned in the safety of the gun and casually leaned forward, oberving the surroundings.

Meanwhile, Dell wandered through the motor pool, casually observing all the damages. Every once in a while he would pass a priest sifting through the rubble and he would salute in binaric. As a precaution, he kept his galvanic rifle at the ready in case of any attack.

Dell was just coming into the ruins of the motor pool. Receiving nods from the various tech-priests as he passed by.
"BY THE OMNISSIAH" A tech-priest screamed, Dell ran to her side and readied his rifle.
++What is wrong?++ he said with calm urgency. He soon spotted what looked like a... hand? It was clearly cybernetic and moving.

After a couple minutes of excavation, they pulled out what looked to be an enginseer... in blue robes...
"No. No, you're dead! You were exiled!" Dell yelled at the enginseer, quickly recognizing who this is.
++My Primus! The destroyer! The destroyer is here!++ he voxed to his Primus as he ran back.

Meanwhile, "Where am I?" Asked the old priest. "Who are you?" He said to the clearly shocked tech-priest. "I think I know that skitarii... Hey! Get back here and help me walk!" And with that, the elderly enginseer gave slow chase to the skitarii.

The Treads of the Guard

Captain Connor took the Lochagos' hand in a firm shake. "Thank you, honored tech-priest." He turned to the enginseer next to him. "Enginseer Dune, would you give your counterpart the details?"

"Of course, Captain. Lochagos Pelwyn, the company is in possession of ten Chimera transports, variously armed. Eight with turret multilaser, one with turret heavy bolter, one with turret heavy flamer. In support are one Wyvern mortar carrier, two Hellhounds, one Devil Dog with a multimelta hull weapon, and two Trojan support vehicles in the technical unit. All vehicles are outfitted with launch systems for hunter-killer missiles, and we have a reserve of fifty such missiles along with many thousands of rounds of ammunition for the heavy bolters and a large enough store of promethium to operate all of our heavy flamers and inferno cannons for roughly three combat loads if distributed evenly across the vehicles." Her inflection was flat and matter-of-fact, though she refrained from speaking in Lingua Technis for the benefit of the uninitiated.
