These days, few save for the Officers visit the Upper Spires of the Cathedral serving as an HQ for the Imperial Guard, fewer still visit the Spire under the Jurisdiction of the Administratum and little actually wish to be there.

Whatever Haley Briarbuck wished to be here or not, she had to. Such was the duty of an Administratum Clerk who owes this hierarchy her life, There are many Civilian Refugees more able than her and could easily replace her and her rations were the Clerks a bit more harsh in their treatment of Civilian Replacement workers.

And where Was Brairbuck sent to? The Office of Ordiante Krugermann herself.
It was located on the opposite side of the other Spire used by the General Staff and instead of individual rooms, the Floors were divided by cubicles for each clerk. By the cone-like shape nature of spires, each floor had less and less cubicles with only a few actual rooms for the more important, therefore Paperwork-Loaded Workers. With the Aforementioned Office Sitting at the top of the structure with few other work spaces alongside it. This is the Core of the Nervous System for the behemoth that fulfils the Guard's Needs and Anya's Office is the biggest Room of them all. Once inside, it is clear however that this place is actually divided by 2: The Dusty Desk of the Ordinate and the Clean Desk of her Assistant with organised, categorised, approved and moved rows of Paperwork creating a Harmonic chaos of an ocean somehow still remaining perfectly understandable and coherent for those with the actual with to look at them.

The Side of the Ordinate was filled with Paperwork to the point one might think it was a mere neglect (But actually they only required her signature before moving on the administrative chain) in contrast to her Assistant whose desk was noticeably emptier but the entire wall behind it was dominated by a massive chart with too many subsections for the lowly brain to fully understand at first glace.

"Briarbuck" The heavy, tired and slightly both Irritating and Irritated voice called from the pile of papers before revealing himself "Laelianus Vulcanis, Ordiante Assistant. Disappointing, I know." the broad and square-ish yet not really muscular frame of a middle-aged man said, his hair half- dishevelled half staying under control and his eyes are covered behind reflective Glasses. Even if he was not using his facial muscles in such a way, it still appears like they are in a constant frown.
"Sit." He Pointed with woolly fingerless green glove at a chair in-front of his desk "Recaff?" Even his tone was not very pleasant.
Regardless of Haley's Answer he vanished behind a paper wall and returned with 2 mugs of sweet smelling recaff that is actually good.
He Placed one in front of the Mail Clerk and the other he kept warming his hands on.

"How do you like it here?" He asked bluntly. "Any Complaints? Don't be shy, the Commissar's Office is in the other Spire."

Haley never thought much of how a Cathedral was turned into a headquarters, it was where she worked after all. When she wasn't delivering mail, on break, or on an errand she was here, sorting mail and messages to go to their proper destinations. It wouldn't be the first time that she has been in the upper spires either, having been unlucky enough to deliver a message to the venerable and fearsome Commissar Holt. However, one place that she never thought of being sent to was the office of the Commander of Imperium forces and Ordinate of the Administratum Anya Krugermann. Her supervisor seemed to take special joy in telling her the news, undoubtedly thinking it was something cruel. As the lowly mail clerk climbed up the many steps to reach her office, she began to agree as millions of doomsday scenarios played through her mind as she wondered what this was all about. Did she mess up? Likely. All the technology around her didn't seem very fond of her besides her datapad and even then she knew she couldn't use it as well as others here did. Man, if Melvin pinned the Sorter malfunction on her.... there will be hell to pay. Did her sass with some of the Guard officers finally get her into trouble? Is she going to get fired? She didn't want to get fired! She wasn't the best but it was a job that fed her family. She can't afford to lose this job!

Haley suddenly found herself at the threshold of the Ordinate Krugermann's office. The door seemed to be open so she assumed she was allowed to enter, however not before giving a courtesy knock on the wall to announce her entry. Dad taught her some manners. She was both relieved and confused to find that she was not here but instead someone else. The fact that this man was sharing an office with perhaps the most highest ranking Administratum member on Valmaria suggested that he was either her equal or subordinate, either way clearly much more powerful than the lowly mail clerk. It was also apparent that he summoned her for he spoke her name and asked her to sit. He introduced himself as Assistant Ordinate Laelianus Vulcanis and asked her for recaff. The clearly unhappy tone of his voice snapped her out of the trance set not only by the bizarreness of the situation but also the most unusual pair of glasses she has ever seen sitting on his face. She quickly tried to save face by clearing her throat and sat up a little straighter in her chair.

"Yes, thank you," she said. He disappeared for a short moment to return with a steaming hot mug. She gave a nod of thanks once he placed it before her, not going for it yet. She wanted it to cool down a little first. Vulcanis then said the unexpected: he asked if she liked it here and if she had any complaints. She blinked, not prepared for this at all. She was expecting a beating, not an interview. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat as she tried to form some coherent opinions. After a minute she said, "Well sir, it's not bad. Pay is okay, work is okay, can barely work any machine in here but I manage. I'm not from a very.... advanced background," she gave a weak smile, "There is always that odd Guardsman who thinks they are my boss but I can handle that. If I have any real complaints, it's just all the... techy stuff. Seems very complicated."

Haley listened as Assistant Ordinate Vulcanis talked. When he asked if she wanted to feed her family more she raised a dirt brown eyebrow. What kind of a question was that? Of course she would. Who wouldn't? She was tempted to answer but then he continued talking, going on about his family and the Guard. For a moment she tried to imagine what family he might have until a slip of paper was presented to her. She looked at it curiously at first but then her heart beat a little faster when she recognized it. It was the note she did when she added herself to the roster! She took the paper to read it. Was she in trouble? Should she not have done that!? Was it too much sass?! When he asked his very edgy did she looked up at him and he could see the worry in her eyes. She took a mini breath to try and refocus and get some nerve back. "Well, sir, it updated the roster so now I'm in it. Maybe a small laugh?" she gave a small smile to hide her nervousness.

His gaze did not move from Haley's Eye Contact (or Eye-to-Glass), he nodded: Perhaps in approval, perhaps in understanding.

"You only Notified the System of doing so, Briarbuck, such announcements are issued by Officials after the entire paperwork procedure is complete. You simply added one more payment with no address, a surplus corrupt clerks siphon out while those who truly deserve it starve." His frown deepened at that delivery, no he is angry about that in particular.

"But one Ordiante Assistant made sure it did not happen." The Old Man's features softened, as much as they could have been by returning to the previous less angry expression while he flicked through the pages on top of the pile from which was the original note by applying pressure with his 4 fingers and lifting up his thumb producing a slight 'thrrrrk' sound of paper, on the last one his thumb stopped and angled to take hold of -rather than flicking like with the rest. "One Thing remains" He removed it from the pile and walked behind the desk, with his remaining free hand, he took hold of the previously curtain-hidden Lever and Rope and pulled down simultaneously with a firm jerk of a practised hand.
The Big Chart next to him, behind the desk and right in front of the Mail Clerk extended to a truly Behemoth Size, encompassing the entire wall from a distant cabinet on one side to a window on the other, as tall as the distance to the ceiling from the floor up. It was made of Small Cells and even smaller details, colours beyond what regular organisational charts usually show, cells within cells opened and closed: extending down long pieces of paper bearing even more details that obscured the cells under them. Words upon words upon words with numbers beyond counting displayed what even the Ordiante herself and Tech Priests Struggled sometimes to fully comprehend: This is, in all but name the Official Imperial Valmarian Front. An Organisational Chart designed to encompass the Entire Planet.

But the Chart was not an inanimate object, not at all: Both Hidden and visible, mechanical apparatus managed its function with a baffling network of sometimes-detectable rails for differently sized and coloured marbles to move upon and enter to various ports -the Planet's Logistics no doubt. On the bottom of the chart, Cogitator Terminals displayed numbers for resources or direct access for inner-workings too delicate to touch by the uninitiated.
The Clockwork Precision and occasionally Appearance of the thing, would make anyone drool -either from Appreciation or more often Primitiveness. Only now with the lid removed could the Mail Clerk hear the Belly of the Beast growling.
No Wall could suspend this apparatus, so the new Ferrocate coating both spires received on this part finally made sense; The wall cannot be thinner and fortifying only one Spire will no doubt cause for suspicion and subsequently enemy fire.

Haley's Shock was short lived, awakened from her stupor by the Ordinate's Assistant's hands thrusting a small plaque bearing her name into hers. The Plaque was no different than the many-many cells on the chart, and like she expected was extendable by pulling out the front name which opened to her essential data. The Other side of the Plaque had a minuscule rod bearing rows of small Cogs of uneven teeth and structure likely to cause different action upon each of them only to repeat in the next cycle.
"Your Task: Find your Place." The Older Clerk stated, before arming her with a small chart of her own serving as a Legend.

The man nodded, which was a decent sign. It seemed more like one of acknowledgment than one of approval but Haley wasn't being scolded. Then he said that she didn't fill out the proper paperwork, likely causing some scams. She looked down, a little ashamed. It's only been a few months and her training was... expedited since much of the Administratum on Naris was blown up by the lance strike. He said that he prevented anyone trying to take advantage of her mistake but that only made her feel marginally better. She needed to do more research next time.

The sound of paper being rapidly flipped through like cards being shuffled made Haley look up. He went behind the desk and to a lever, pulled it back, and reveal.... something amazing. Her green eyes watched in wonderment at the Big Chart, a thing she has only heard about. It displayed heaps of data for the entire planet's Administratum. She couldn't focus on a single aspect because it was all so vast and enticing. Like many others, her mouth was agape with awe but thankfully there was no drool. She was still looking at it when something was suddenly thrust into her hands, breaking the trance. She looked down to see that it was a plaque like those on the Big Chart but... it bore her name. She looked up and he gave her a task: Find her place. She was given a legend to help her.

Haley looked up back at the Big Chart and her face fell. She never considered herself important but seeing this chart really dug the point home. She felt minuscule as she began to get overwhelmed by the sheer size and complexity of the visual representation of the Administratum on Valmaria. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and tried to calm herself. She was a native of this world, she's made it this far even as she fumbled with technology, and if she could survive the fire that burned down her farm and making it to Naris she can do this. She opened her green eyes, a new sparkle in them like a polished emerald as she showed newfound confidence.

Haley didn't have many friends on this base, or in general, but anyone who spent an inkling amount of time with her would know that she loved to read, citing and quoting a few stories she enjoyed. Walls of text didn't phase her and she began to imagine herself in one of these stories. In this, she was basically the daring Rogue Trader Valiantina trying to find her way home after being spit out of a Warp Storm. The first thing Haley did was look for the node for Naris, a task that wasn't too hard since it was one of the biggest on the Chart. She then looked for cells that held those dealing with the Departmento Munitorum, then moved down to Supply/Delivery. She got a little lost in that cell for awhile until she spotted Personal/Mail. There was a list of names, names she recognized as her colleagues, and then with a finger hovering over it, she went down it until she found where she would be according to rank and the letter of her last name.

"Here, at least that's where I would be right now," she turned to look back at him, certain she was right but needing to make sure.

Lest not forget Haley Briarbuck is a Mail Clerk and not a simple scribe, knowing the general structure and inferring exact locations from increasingly vague instructions is part of her job -Her Success was expected but not to that degree.

The Older Clerk stepped closer to inspect her work and with an approving nod confirmed it was acceptable
"Good, Briarbuck. Now push it in" His hand grabbed one plaque inside the sub-sub-sub-Category-Minoris and pulled down which created an opening between the 2 small cells, the Sounds of Cog Machinery were a bit louder when exposed but not beyond the irritating level. This Mechanism is Fluid in its application as the entire column down the category shifted to allow the access.

With a Click the Name of Haley was fitted tightly and 1 Marble Symbolising a certain amount of Thrones changed its course somewhere on the Railing from Accounting Surplus, A major Siphoning Pool, directly to the place signifying the sub-sub-sub-Category-Minoris. One Step towards Efficiency was made right before their own eyes. For Confirmation, a few digits were changed on the monitors below.

His eyebrow arched above the rim of his glasses in question
"How was that? Can do it unaided in the future? It is a new, very demanding and paying assignment"

"You have potential, Briaebuck, not the job yet." Vulcanis pointed out with a stern tone. "Stand back" he warned with a slight push before closing the mechanism and with it the sounds subsided. Laelianus returned back to his Desk "First, before your position can be considered, you need to learn the Administratum: I will lend you manuals; Read them after work, which takes a priority." True to his word, the Ordinate Assistant opened a drawer and pulled put a small sealed parchment package with a White Administratum Pin tying the small ropes together on top.

"But before that, what is your Opinion on Abhumans?"

For once the Older Clerk's mouth curled into a Smile, not a particularly big or expressive one, but noticeable by the absence of frowning lines
"The Imperium of Man is not a tolerant place for Mutants, as it should but people often confuse the two. Prejudice and Spite affect things even on the high levels: it can be easy to starve the Ratlings by cutting off their supplies but it is a Net Loss very few clerks have the Brain Capacity to see. I am glad you are one of them."
Then he gave her the Package
"With this, you will learn how to organise paperwork, issue it, and deliver it by yourself. You will interact with as many Guard faces as your waking hours allow. Use the newfound skills to deliver me reports where, of what and by who inefficiencies are created as well as their solutions."
"If you find Guard Personnel whose Records are not existing within the chart, you will do their paperwork for them and send it here for grading, for that you will be given a miniature version containing only the relevant data. Knowledge of the Machine is negligible and can be taught later. Wear the Pin on the inside of your Collar." He tugged on his own revealing a Bronze one. "At the End of your Probation Period you will get the job."

The smile didn't go unnoticed to the mail clerk but Haley wisely decided to keep quiet about it as she listened to what AOrd Vulcanis had to say. She could see how people would do such a thing, those who weren't noble suffered similar prejudice. He then actually gave her the package. She moved it to hold it and her arms at the small of her back as she listened more as he explained what he expected from her and what she should learn, nodding every once in awhile to acknowledge understanding. When he tugged on his pin her eyes widened a bit but she didn't move. It would be rude to put on the pin right now while he was still speaking. He spoke of a probation period, which she assumed for this particular job instead of the current one he had then she gave a final nod once he finished.

"Yes sir," she said the quickly put on the white pin on in a way that mirrored his, struggling for only a brief moment. She smiled at it, an official badge of her office. However, a thought wheedled into her mind and she couldn't simply shake it. She looked up at him then said, "Sir, I want to say thank you very much for considering me, but... why me?"

I'm not important. There are more qualified and experienced people who could do this. Why me? Haley kept these additional thoughts in her mind, afraid saying them would jeopardize this incredible chance.

Vulcanis gestured towards himself with a palm on his chest "I am not a Local. My mission here is to stabilize and improve the Administratum to a satisfactory level. It may be reached in a few years or even tomorrow, I don't know. What I do know is that I will be redeployed and systems stagnate without oversight. I require a successor to watch over things once I am gone. And You.." he pointed right back at the candidate
"...are a Nobody Mail Clerk with a lot to Lose." the OA replied in a characteristic blunt manner "...And it makes you an infinitely better worker." Usually it is not considered a compliment unless it's paired with the following.
"Examine your Colleagues: Selfishly ambitious Noble 2nd, 3rd and even 4th Sons who use the Administratum as a tool to advance their career and personal glory, or Complacent weak-minded fools who care for their comfortable seats and nothing else while the planet is collapsing and was doing so even before the war right in front of their eyes. The most well meaning are too deep inside the system to adapt no matter how much they wish it. The Old Guard has failed, and who is better to replace them than a newblood with very good organizational sense.." he jabbed at the Chart behind him with a thumb "...and the right incentive to do well or a detterant from failure?"

It was fairly obvious Vulcanis wasn't a local and since he would be sent away needing a native to replace him as a successor would make sense. However, what surprised her was that when he pointed at her he confirmed what she already knew: she was a nobody mail clerk with a lot to lose. If she lost her job here she wasn't sure what she would do, let alone what her family would do. He then quickly backed it up by adding it made her a much, no infinitely, better worker. She decided to take that as a compliment.

He then went on to compare her to her colleagues. He first went along with the nobles, which immediately set a frown on her face. The ones he described made her immediately made her think of former clerk DeMettrio. While she never met him, she did her very best to stay away from him, his exploits and power grabs, including his most recent escapade in quitting the Administratum to join the Guard, made him quite infamous in the closed and connected world of the Administratum. He represented everything she hated: selfish, power hungry, backstabbing, devious, two-faced, and worst noble. The thought of him was enough to put a sour taste in her mouth. Vulcanis then spoke of those who simply waded through life with no real desire or ambition. She couldn't blame anyone for that, people have to live and spots needed to be filled somehow, but she agreed that was certainly not someone who should succeed his position. He then spoke of the well-meaning beings too deep in the system, her first thoughts going toward the Ordinate, doing her best to pick up the Administratum while being saddled with leadership in the Guard as a Commander. The Old Guard? Blew up with the capital. He then pointed out that there was no one better to replace them than someone new with good organizational sense and the right incentive to do well. She decided to ignore that last part for Haley was stunned by the ending compliment.

He really believed in her, or at least had some faith in her. Haley loved her family but she was very much the black sheep. She always had her eyes set on bigger things or dreams that only seemed possible in the books she loved to read, something that they never ceased criticizing her for. To be called good at something.... it lifted her spirits up. The mail clerk gave a soft smile and stood a little straighter. "Thank you for considering me, sir, and I won't let you down!" she said with some small enthusiasm, "Is there something in this that I should look into first or are they already in that kind of order?"

She held the package in front of her to show what she was talking about.

"Yes." Laelianus dismissed with a wave of his hand already turning to open the door with his back to Haley "Each piece builds upon the last right from the basics. The first are written akin to children's books, simplistic but neccessary." He explained while stepping to the door. When he put his hand on the handle, it was not turned to open yet, instead: the OA himself spun on his heel with Haley's Recaff she neglected to drink in the other hand "You forgot something, Briarbuck." Vulcanis said, gently raising the mug, until Briarbuck finally took it and began drinking. He leaned close, his expression more grave than usual and his tone hushed "Nothing Happened, you are a Mail Clerk who overstepped her boundries and summoned for disciplining. You were punished to do paperwork for the entire Guard, Nothing else. Understand?". He returned back to his upright position and recieved back the empty mug, his other hand reached to pull on the skin under his eye in an obvious gesture of deception, unfortunately his mirror glasses were too big to see anything else but the finger entering the space between. He trusted the deliberate, slow and meaningful action will not go over the Mailwoman's head. Then he opened the door.

Haley nodded in understanding. A small part of her figured they would be in order to read but she had to be sure. She decided to best not take the indirect insult, calling her a child and simple, personally. Her training wasn't the most thorough and she still had a lot to learn. She made her way to the door and was surprised to find her neglected mug of recaff waiting for her. She took it and gave it a sip. It was surprisingly still warm and, to non caf drinker, tasted good. When the Assistant Ordinate leaned close she looked up and leaned in to better hear what he had to say.

She was supposed to pretend that she was disciplined. Haley immediately understood why. If anyone over her, which was practically everyone, knew that she was in line to become one of the most powerful people on Valmaria they would quickly snuff out whatever chance she had, or maybe even snuff out her life. She gave a grave nod of understanding. As he opened the door she gave the air of being beaten, in a metaphorical sense, with her green eyes downcast and shoulders slumped.

The mail clerk stepped outside then turned to him. “I will get you my first report tomorrow, sir,” she said.

"For your sake you will." The old man called in a menacing manner akin to a bearely contained growl of death and closed the door.
