"Custuuur!" The small child crowed excitedly, bobbing up and down and then looking up at her mother for confirmation that such a thing was really allowed.

Lana nodded weakly, still half-waiting for the other shoe to drop. But then, he'd actually tried to help all along, hadn't he? She'd tried to damage him and the man had just smiled and taken it in stride. It was infuriating and embarrassing that he had been . . . so damn nice. That was only compounded by the fact that there wasn't much of a grand reason for her choosing him. It had been thoughtless, brought on by panic and terror when she realized her situation. She'd scrabbled for the first name that came to mind, and her mother had several times worked for the McKinnon's or others who worked with them. The only thing she'd known about him was that he was supposed to be a relatively decent fellow. Maybe that had been the extent of the reasoning. He was about the right age, well-off and nice. That was enough for a panicking girl to try and ruin his reputation . . .

What she'd done was heinous and vile and there wasn't a day that went by that she didn't regret at least some aspect of it. But yet there he was, offering her food.

Damn it.

"Food. Sounds good." She managed, trying to hide her growling stomach. "I'll eat just a bite. Not very hungry."

As he guided them in she could feel her sister trailing just far enough back to watch over her. Tricia . . .well, Lana had never quite told her the whole story. So Tricia had hated Lothar, but that wasn't right. Another shame to throw on a pile. Here he was being the height of a gentleman, even with the few stares the other locals were giving them. "I---" She wasn't sure what to say. "I don't think me stopping by would be good. For your reputation. I don't want to bother you." That was rich, the words rang hollow in her head. If she hadn't wanted to bother him, why had she tried to wreck his reputation? Brilliant move, moron

His talk of healing . . . "I don't know if some wounds can ever heal." She ended tiredly as she squeezed her daughter's mittened hand. Mira was oblivious. All the child knew was the nice man was taking her to custard and food. And that was enough. Maybe that could be enough for Lana too. For just a night.
"In life, war. In death, peace. In life, shame. In death, atonement."

@Tabitha

Lucius eyes wander on the landscape, a point of nostalgia visible on his face. After a moment, he responds to Maru.
“Well… Valmaria remind me of the region where I grow up. Vosges is an Agri-world like Valmaria, the northern part of the main continent was composed by great and windy lowlands covered by fields of copper-corn. These plains were surrounded by smalls forested mountain. When you travel south the weather becomes drier and the lowlands leave room to higher mountains, in this part of the land you can see the fume of the manufactiras.
It’s a fertile and productive planet, we provide food, men and equipment for most of the Imperial Guards of our sub-sector. But our life is not without danger, we suffer regular attack of the Archenemy trying to cut off the supply lines of our fighting force.”

He pauses for a bit
“That’s my home, that’s why I fight for.”

Between the nearby child being very excited of the prospect of getting custard and Lucius describing his home a smile started spreading across her lips. Even if it wasn't a very detailed explanation it still conjured an image in her mind. A reminder, together with the child over there, what they were doing and perhaps even more importantly... why.

"It sounds quite lovely... I mean... apart from the attacks. I guess you could do without that bit. "

She stamped her feet in the ground to build some more warmth and looked out over the festivities, seeing all the people milling about under their protection. The food line, the tent with St Yarrick and the repair tents. Biting her lip thoughtfully then said, with a slightly distant tone

"Do you think we'll be able to save them?"

Haley listened, smiling when he smiled at her and nodding in acknowledgement when appropriate. First local friend? That was promising; along with perhaps him being able to go out with her. It was touching that he believed this feast was to give back to the civilians but then he expressed worry about what to do to help or if his singing was any good.

“Hey, that stuffy big hat wouldn’t have you chained to her if she didn’t like your singing,” she smiled then said, “You know, if you want to talk about Valmaria or… just in general you can probably find me in the post office, especially in the afternoons.”

Chirigus listened and nodded as the woman explained the machines condition, already working on taking out screws and blots to the casing to the sewing machine, two mechadendrites whirring into sockets on the small device. He spoke in binary, before looking up to Glynda and speaking to her.

"It appears to be a simple misalignment of it spirits. It may have been over burdened or for some other reason, but it should not be hard to repair." he spoke calmly, as he began chanting to it as his hands worked at the gears and body, applying a small amount of oil to them.

++Mechanism, I restore thy spirit, let the God-Machine breathe half-life unto thy veins and render thee functional. 01001111 01101101 01101110 01101001 01110011 01110011 01101001 01100001 01101000 00100000 01100010 01100101 00100000 01110000 01110010 01100001 01101001 01110011 01100101 01100100++

With a small click, and the sewing machine suddenly began working once more, thread running as the needle moved up and down again. Chirigus smiled behind his mask, as he began to place the casing back on to it. He handed it back to Glynda, along with a small piece of paper.

"Here. That should do well. This seal should also keep it from breaking down in the future. I suggest also leaving a small bit of silk or velvet draped over it. The spirits will work harder if that is the case."

Who says the future has to be grimdark? Matt Ward that's who.

@Mechanicus Tent

Glynda watched curiously as Doug dug into his pockets until he pulled out a slate grey cloth. Judging from the texture it seemed like a towel and the designs told that it wasn’t a normal towel either. She didn’t need the designs, however, to know that it held value, at least to Doug. She returned Doug’s smile in kind as they exchanged gifts.

“Thank you, deary. Happy Candlemass,” she said to him.

It was around this time that the Tech Priest spoke up. She held the cloth as listened to what he had to say. While it may be simple to the Enginseer, the older woman watched entranced as his mechadendrites and hands danced around her precious sewing machine. Admittedly it was a bit frightening when he began speaking that bizarre and strange language those of his ilk spoke but soon it was finished. When it worked again her eyes lit up with joy as she gasped in surprise.

“Thank you! Thank you so much, dear!” she happily took the machine into her custody, “You are so kind! I wish there was some way I can repay you.”

Glynda looked over the Enginseer’s robes. “Perhaps maybe stitch a few holes? Maybe a new robe?”

Chirigus looked down to his robe and smiled. A kind gesture but not one that was needed.

“It is alright. You do not have to give anything back. That is what this time of year is for, yes? To give with out receiving.” He motioned to the events and decorations around,”Plus, I am quite fond of this robe. Each tear was a lesson at some point, every burn and stain from hard work. It helps remind me of home.”

He frowned, surprised by the sudden wave of emotions that he felt. It wasn’t like him to talk like that. He adjusted his bodies horomones and flushed is blood of any excess dopamine. Feeling the cool logic once again course through his mind, he looked back to Glynda.

“You enjoy the evening. I believe there may be some food left if your so inclined. Merry candlemass.”

@People Crowding Erika

Verena’s eyes narrowed at the new threat to her comrade. The tattoos, insignia, and overall primitive attire told her the Corporal was a Prometheron. Reports spoke of them as brash, something he proved as fact when he suggested he deal with Erika instead and that the Krieg were responsible for this. Years of discipline kept her face neutral but her anger couldn’t help be stoked a little.

“Your arrival made her more distraught and she wasn't like this until Candlemass, Corporal,” she said.

An eye looked back to Erika for a moment before looking back at the two non-Krieg.

“Whatever you decide gentlemen, involving more people will deteriorate her state more for her wishes are to be left alone,” Verena paused then looked over to the Prometheron, “What is your plan?”

this is getting nowhere. slone thought to himself as the other krieger responded, he was about call it quits when all of a sudden it had a change of mind and asked him what his plan was, instinctively he looked to the platter of cakes he was still holding

"first, give her one of these" he replied, gesturing to the pastries on the platter "next, pick her up and follow me."

from there he set off, pausing only to look and see if Verena was following behind with erika in tow, walking around the back of the PDF barracks where in the secluded area there was a foxhole with a lean-to over it and a small camp fire that was barely alight a couple of feet away

"ok, now take a seat and get comfy cause we're going to be here for a while" sitting down the corporal picked up an empty bottle that lay inside the foxhole "geez, thanks for saving some sam, real thoughtful of you" he muttered to himself

"right, where to begin...i'm guessing its fair to assume that neither of you actually 'get' candlemass right? and to be fair how can you understand it, all the death corps teaches you is how to suffer and die yeah? correct me if i'm wrong"

@People Dealing With Erika

Verena looked over the odd sweet (she was absent when they were distributed through the regiment) before giving it to Erika and scooping the taller woman into her arms. It probably looked a little awkward to anyone watching but if she was struggling it didn’t show. Assault troopers are meant to be strong and her voxcaster was not light after all.

They found themselves in a suitably secluded lean-to. At the order to sit and ‘get comfy’, the Krieg gently put down her comrade near them before sitting crisscrossed with her hands in her lap. The Prometheron asked if they ‘get’ Candlemass, expressing that he didn’t expect them to and stating that the Death Korps only teach them to suffer and die. Verena’s eyes narrowed.

“For the record, the Death Korps teaches more than simply suffering and dying,” a edge of indignation crept in her voice before she visibly straightened, “From what I was taught, Candlemass is a holiday celebrated in many parts of the Imperium where participants express gratitude for their family, friends, colleagues, and others of significance usually through gatherings and the exchanging of gifts. Am I inaccurate?”

@Archer

It seemed it was time for their goodbyes as Luca brought up that Haley should probably tend to her sister, but there were promises of seeing each other again. When he said that they, being friends, should see each other outside work she nodded with a small smile. Friend. Baby steps. At the mention of seeing him in the Vox Office, Haley did her best not to scoff.

“I don’t know. She seems pretty… nosey. I’m afraid if I stay in there too long I might get sucked into being a maid or something,” she half-joked. That would be something nobles do; assuming everyone that wasn’t them was just help to boss around. Just look at poor Luca: a fraking Terran soldier being used as little more than a manservant. She wasn’t afraid of being sucked in so much as becoming so fed up she might say or do something she might regret.

Disappear, Gone, Cease staining this place with her presence, That was the Kriegerin's will. It was defied by some edible object thrust between her hands and a sudden hoist upwards.

The firmness of the grip made the identity to whom it belonged quite obvious even to the muddled wreck that was Erika, who being either too emotionally and mentally exhausted or familiar enough with being escorted to krieg disciplinary tribunals to know there is no point in running away, made no resistace.

Still unable to fully carry her own weight, Erika leaned onto the comms trooper as they walked towards what the Kriegerin assumed was Death Korps HQ, to hide the further disgrace to Krieg's name she unclasped the cloak's edges and excess material at the shoulders, combined with the damp hood the cameleoline covered her entirely from head to boot.

They walked this way for a few minutes until they arrived into some sort of waiting area that resebled nothing like an enterance to a desciplinary comitee. Slone was talking about something with understanding candlemas yet Erika was too preoccupied with one question:

"Vat iz zis place?"
She weakly asked, wiping the ice from her face with a palm of her hand while the other held the yet untasted pastry.

@People Dealing With Erika

It was good to hear that the information she learned wasn’t faulty. The Prometheron then asked why Verena thought that her comrade seemed to be terrified of this event. Her face set into thought as she pondered this; a slight furrowing of the brow and a small frown. It seemed the Corporal was suggesting Erika was suffering from some form of mental trauma. But Krieg were trained to resist this. If they were to suffer from such things they likely wouldn’t have survived training. Mental trauma was something that happened to other regiments. She had no idea what would cause a hardened, fully trained, Krieg Scout Unit to suffer the mental trauma, especially after all the things she’s been through.

Then again, Erika was always a 'special' unit; an exception to the norm. She always seemed to defy Krieg standards in one way or another for arguably better or worse. Perhaps… this was another thing she was an exception of?

After what was probably a good minute Verena finally looked up at the Prometheron and said, “My best estimation is that she suffered some sort of mental or emotional trauma on this day.”

eyes darting back and forth between the pair, levi sat there also deep in thought, trying to figure out what it was they exactly meant

"i..what.....why is that..'exhibiting weakness' even an issue?" he asked, confused "we're not on the front lines, holt has the 'no executions' rule unless its a really REALLY big problem and all the other guardsmen know how rough it is at the moment"
