Vayne grinned a bit at Cat as he chewed on the candy he'd been offered, and he'd purposefully taken a bite out of. He held his arms out as the other dressed him in the costume, helping where he could to fasten the parts. He finished pulling on the fake augmetic arm, and fixing the fake eye over his face, before glancing to Yorke. "Good enough?"

With the Commissar's approval, he grabbed some of the bags of candies and ambled out to where the other had been seated, preparing himself for others to come. The young Quartermaster was excited to bring some cheer to the holidays, whether it be with children or anyone else who wanted to visit 'Saint Yarrick'.

The little girl giggled when Luca asked for her name.

“Casey,” she looked up at her older sister to get a warning glare. If Luca looked up at her also, however, he would be greeted with a smile.

“Well, this is a event inviting natives and I am a native,” Haley said, “Plus my mom was hoping someone here would fix the sewing machine.”

“Is it true that Sisters of Battle weave your cloak thing?” Casey pointed at it.

Verena watched as Erika looked up at her for a split second before she dashed out the door. The comms trooper simply watched, stunned. She was aware that Erika was a little more… unorthodox compared to most in the regiment but she’s never seen her display such emotion. This was concerning to say the least. She must investigate.

The words of the Confessor called the Kriegerin’s attention. She turned to him and gave the polite smile that was beaten into her.

“Perhaps later today, Confessor. I would ask about your customs for Candlemass but my subordinate is a more pressing matter. I will be back, holy one,” she said.

Not waiting for a dismissal, Verena pocketed her pict capturer and ran after Erika.

Her shift was finally over. Another Chem Dog took Hat’s spot in the serving line and she exchanged her serving utensils, orders, and seasons pleasantries before departing. The first thing she did was take off her gloves and was quickly followed by eating a slice of ham she knicked for herself. After she swallowed she took out a special cigar stub and lit it up, inhaling a nice long drag before letting it out slowly. This used to be a full cigar but after 5 years of smoking it only on Candlemass it has been reduced to only a quarter of its original size; a bit longer than a unused lho stick. She only smoked it on Candlemass because it was the day she got it, automatically making it special. As she smoked her eyes wandered until they settled on an unusual sight. It was a Commissar she’s never seen before who looked like a wannabe Commissar Yarrick whose costume they made out of scraps from a dumpster. Her eyes narrowed. Normally, she did her best to stay away from authority but Yarrick held a special place in her heart. While his tales may be legends of a saint but to her they were real deeds of a real man. Even the Orks speak of him for she heard them say it when she fought on Armageddon. Hat wasn’t sure if it was out of some sense of pride or reverence to the man but she felt compelled to investigate. She had to know if he was a impersonator or merely an imposter.

The first visitor this new ‘Yarrick’ would receive was a small Chem Dog dressed in a greatcoat wearing a wreath on her head and smoking a cigar. Her Chogorian decent hazel eyes squinted at him scrutinizingly then a moment later Hat took out her stub, pointed at him, and asked, “Who are you supposed to be?”

Thankfully, there were no children around yet.
Apparently, I made too many characters. Here they are:

much like the regiments that made up the vast warmachine known as the astra militarum and by extension the cultures of various humans across the breadth of the imperium, the ways in which candlemas was commemorated was many and varied.

for some it was about the panache and spectacle of the festivities, for others - particularly the devout - it was a time of prayer and reflection, and there were those who saw as an opportunity to bring community together.

for the death worlders of prometheron this tradition in the imperium of having a unique approach to candlemas was no different, though it could to a surprise for some that their focus was more towards the community side, assuming they were ever noticed. for much like how their regiments waged war the pale skinned guardsmen took to their candlemas tasks - be it corporal slone juggling multiple trays of pastries, gingerbread biscuits and cakes in what few ovens were available, or sgt beckett and the remainder of her scouts watching over the refugees, civilians and guardsmen attending to them via the dozen or so expertly concealed dugouts and foxholes around the outer perimeter of the pdf barracks - in the same fashion of thankless service. unseen, unheard but watching over those who could not defend themselves all the same, like spectres in silent vigil warding off spirits who sought to cause harm.

Slowly at first, almost shyly, Aesteban entered into the courtyard without any of the usual pomp and fanfare.
But this unusual behaviour was far from a sense of modesty. Far from it, Aesteban simply was distrustful of any public event that involved such a degree of leeway to peasants and the rest of human vermin. Indeed, he could not help but to frown and snort at the sight of officers and commissars mixing with the soldiery and even serving the peasantry.

Alas, Merovech traitors and conspirators were hiding here. Somewhere.
To root out these disease, much patience and lenghty investigation was needed. However, conducting an independent investigation as he was, the significant resources of the Militarum were not at his disposal. In time he will need contacts as well as suspects to work with and these social events could very well provide him with both.

Dressed with his gala uniform, the light of the candles enhanced even more the brimming aura of pure white across the fabric. Golden threads and buttons of solid gold, combined with a short cape and blue sash with a lapislazuli brooch to further reinforce his image of wealth and power.

There were, of course, other reasons to assist to the event and Aesteban gestured toward the source to come inside and enter into the courtyard alongside him...

Tracy could feel Aesteban tensing under her grip and tried to loosen her hand- but the fact that she was there, trussed up like some fancy lady next to the Nobleman speaking to another Noble made her immediately nervous. She gripped him a bit harder.

At the very least, she resisted puffing on the lho stick again as she was introduced. Flicking whatever was left of her lho stick away, she tucked the holder into a hidden pocket under her capelet, freeing her hand to pick up her skirts and perform a textbook curtsy, head slightly bowed respectfully toward the Commandant.

"Captain McKinnon, a true pleasure to make your acquaintance. I hope you're having a wonderful evening, despite the cold," Waltz purred, before straightening back up. She could feel sweat beading at the back of her neck, absolutely sure she was mis-pronouncing some of her words by trying to properly enunciate small talk. It seemed in afterthought she remembered to stick her hand out to the man, palm down, expectantly.

Glancing toward Aesteban with as much of a fond expression on her face as she could muster, Tracy sighed softly at the Nobleman, before giving Lothar a bright smile, "I'm so very happy to be here with my dear Lord DiMettrio tonight... What a wonderful Candlemass celebration to bring us all together-" She ground the last part through her teeth, hoping that the other nobleman wouldn't see right through her; At the very least, to counter Aesteban's acerbity with some gracious charm.

Tabitha smiled at sargeant Lachance as she took a bite out of her own cookie, it was quite nice to get something sweet to nibble on. It wasn't cold per se, more like chilly. But she was also spending most of the time standing still and occasionally a whiff came from the kitchens with the smell of cooking food and a suggestion of the warmth over there.

What he said about not being shot at was quite true though. While she didn't get why just she was chosen to strand here, despite the commandant's and the sargeant's assurances that it was important and she looked harmless enough, she had to agree with him that this beat being shot at. By a significant margin too. And she couldn't really argue with his second point either: if it made the narisian's feel safer, then she'd stand here all night too. The life of a guardswoman was one of sacrifice and this one? It was a comparably small sacrifice.

"I'm private Maru, Tabitha Maru, Sargeant."

She looked at the commandant as he mused over the crowds inside, there was something melancholic about it. She supposed that as frightening and painful this was for them all, it must be ten times worse for him. For them this was fighting fellow humans, but to him it must be watching his home being torn asunder. One night of peace must be so much more valuable for him than for her.

Casting a glance down the road she noticed something colourful coming their way. Turning that way she saw Lieutenant Dimettrio in a resplendent uniform coming their way (how on Terra did he manage not to acquire one but two uniforms that fit him perfectly here in such short notice... furthermore how did he manage to keep them white? Truly a candlemass miracle, right there). As per usual he had a superior air about him, in fact she was quite certain that if she looked up "feeling superior" in a dictionary she'd find his image right there.

But it was the lieutenant's company that truly caught her attention. It wasn't that she was beautiful, though she absolutely was. The way her emerald dress was complimented with her hair, the intensely red lips and heavy gold chain working excellently as contrast. She looked absolutely stunning and it took some degree of effort not to look completely awestruck at the woman's appearance. If she felt slightly inferior to DiMettrio then she felt like she was dressed in rags compared to his company.

But it wasn't that that sent her mind racing. It was that there was something strangely familiar about miss Waltze, as the lieutenant introduced her. But surely she had never met her before? The list of noblewomen she knew was very short. Non-existant even. And yet... she was felt sure she had seen this woman before. But where? A passerby on the streets? Refugee crowds? She couldn't put a finger on it. Strange.

Verena paused a moment to reorient herself before quickly picking back up Erika’s trail. Erika may be fairly stealthy but being in distress was not a quiet affair. It also helped that she was taller than her and there were footprints in the snow. Eventually she would catch up to her subordinate but frowned when she found that Erika attracted another’s attention. Judging from the insignias, he seemed to be a lieutenant of the 89th Vendoland. This was not good; Verena theorized presence of a foreign officer would only exasperate whatever was going on with Erika. She moved to intercept the officer, stopping between him and Erika and giving him a salute.

“Good day, lieutenant,” she said, “I take it your presence was drawn by my comrade, sir?”

Hat took in another puff of her cigar before pointing out the flaws on ‘Yarrick’, saying, “No you’re not. Yarrick isn’t a redhead and your eye is in the wrong place.”

She paused then asked, “Do you know anything about Yarrick? Do you need help?”

Casey felt the offered fabric. “It’s like the same stuff Mom works with sometimes,” she remarked aloud.

Haley nodded when Luca said she was here with her family and as he spoke more, asking if he could join them because he had nothing better to do at the moment and had few friends and no family to spend the time with. Poor Luca, Haley thought. She lost some of her family in the war but she still had some and a home. Even other Guardsmen still had their comrades. But Luca? He was all alone here.

She gave him a sympathetic smile. “We would be happy to have you. Right now we are bothering ‘Yarrick’ while we wait for my mom to get the sewing machine fixed,” she said.

“Oh, I know all about you,” Casey giggled at Luca.

“Why don’t you go talk to Saint Yarrick, huh?” Haley said in a way that her request wasn’t a suggestion.

Mama Briarbuck was delightfully surprised when the giant, who called himself Dug Manner, gave her a salute and bow. When he asked for her name she gave a little curtsey and bowed her head.

“Glynda,” she said, “A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Manner.”

After she bowed she looked concerned. “Are you cold, dear?” she adjusted her glasses as she looked over his clothes with a practiced eye.

There was a sudden silence behind Hat, in which one could have heard a grenade pin drop, before a small child started audibly crying.
"Wh-hat does she meeaaaaan?"

Picking the little girl up, her father attempted to shush and rock the infant on his shoulder, while staring at the Chem Dog with the quietly seething exasperation of the parent who would have to deal with the fallout from this.

Across the courtyard, and Naris, night began to really set in. The flickering candles laid out along the walls created a fiery fence against the darkness beyond.
Expectantly, carolers began to gather at the entrance of the makeshift chapel, and a small squad of Cadians had been dragged along to join in by the locals. Each holding a candle tightly, their smiling or slightly bemused faces were lit from below as they began to sing.

At the front of the group, a pair of PDF troopers held a lantern either side of Vox Officer Ahde, as with a good natured smile, he found himself interpreting the high gothic hymns into universal sign for the watching crowds.
