"Oh. Thank you, sir."

Well... that had gone well. Tabitha pulled the cloak the major had handed her over her shoulder and pulled up the hood over her face, partly to get it to sit right and partly to hide her red cheeks. She felt quite foolish, even if none of the sons made any indication of taking any pleasure in her humiliation. Had the other soldier known this and tricked her into taking a cloak several sizes too big? Or had he tried to indicate to her that it was? She honestly didn't know.

She gave Savin a grateful smile when the ratling came to help her, trying to get some practice in moving as instructed. She didn't activate her cloak just yet, waiting for them to get the command to move out to do so. Didn't want to drain any batteries early after all. When Savin activated her cloak, the cadian just watched how it blended with the background. How everything looked distorted and how the cells slowly changed to match the environment around it.

Seeing Levi cover his face in mud and a some of the unseen sons do the same Tabitha decided to follow their example and knelt down to grab some mud to smear over her neck and face. Besides... it'd help hide the blushing.

levi halted for a second, as if something was amiss, the corporal looked around before clearing his throat "you can come out now" there was a pause before something shifted and came out slowly from behind a rather large patch of rubble, the something being none other than winston

"and just what are you doing here?" levi asked the creature, who merely snorted at him in response "no, you're not coming with" winston snorted at him again "look they don't make cameoline cloaks your size, no don't give me that look"

unable to suppress a groan levi looked around to see where the group was and tried to consider his options, but he could tell from its body language that the gusion was not going to be deterred "fine, fine....just try to behave yourself alright?"

Savin gives a huge grin when she sees Winston and hurries over, "Hello, you! Are you going to be coming with us?"
She offers the big lizard her palm to sniff, rummaging in her ruck for some treats for him.
The ratling glances at Levi "I've missed this big fella while I was laid up. He reminds me of home."

Mic glanced at Gabby, before checking who else was within earshot. He shook his head, "Ain't nobody wants to deal with us since the bombs. We're too hot at the moment. Lot of the lads going thirsty. Or worse."

*

"It happens. That's the thing about Guard," Keegan laughed quietly as he stepped away from Tabitha, "Weatherproof cloaks, water-based ink. Anywhere the quill-pushers can save a few gelt."

Cat half-shrugged dismissively at Levi's comment, the officer had much more pressing thoughts to deal with. Like why Keegan was coming with them, why he'd chosen the group he had. Or in fact, why he'd chosen any faces from outside his own regiment. The more thought Yorke applied, the less progress he made.

Levi made sense, and whilst the commissar was instinctively protective of his fellow Mordians, Cat could broadly see why Ema was chosen. Savin he also understood, and while perhaps to Cat it would have made more sense to send Gabby with Brinton, obviously, loyalty was useful.
But Tabi and himself? It couldn't just be to rile up Brinton. Nobody would take that risk on unknown team members.

Stirred from chewing it over by Savin, Yorke smiled, "Been fair reet! Not as..." he waved a finger by his temple in a small gesture of clarity, "...you know, as I'd like, but can't complain. How're you holding up?"
The only way the commissar could privately speak to the small scout with any discretion was to kneel down and pretend to be fixing a loose buckle on his boot, "What do you make of all this?" he murmured, keeping his eyes on the buckles, "Why bring us in at all?"

Straightening up after a moment, Yorke was half surprised by the sudden appearance of Winston in close proximity, but any reaction from the commissar was sidelined by Major Keegan's amusement.
The Unseen Son gave a barking laugh, stepping a little closer, "Nobody said it was a twofer if I brought your bony ass, lad. Can it bite through Tau armour?" he stood with one thumb hooked on his belt, the other holding a flare that he span in his fingers while looking at the giant reptile.

"You hungry?" the major grinned and addressed Winston, before tapping his own chin with the flare in thought, and looking down at the creatures feet, "...Can you dig?"

The Unseen Sons had begun packing down any unused equipment, and clearing the area. In a few moments it was as though nothing had ever been there, the extras secreted away.

"So," Keegan began strolling towards the edge of the base, expecting the group to follow, "The camp is in the remains of the true city. Broken cover, but lots of it... But more importantly... Most importantly," he smiled like a shark and pointed the battered paving, "Sewers. We can pop up right in their midst if we find the right access tunnel. Tau don't know it. Rebels don't expect us to get dirty. Or they wouldn't place a camp right over a sewer network."

The group reached the gate, and wordlessly the Cadians on duty parted, knowing better than to question Keegan, but paying some curious attention to the rest of the group. A couple gave a friendly wave or nod once the major had passed by, familiar faces from the Foxhole or drill.

Keegan gave Savin a quietly amused expression, as if to ask what else would be expected of her, "...Yes?"

*

Nearby at the gate, Brinton's group were having much less luck with the slightly obtuse Cadians.
Never exactly fans of the Second Sons, and significantly less likely to face repercussions for messing with them, the gate guard were processing things ponderously slowly.
Brinton stood with his hands on his hips, an increasingly sour expression on his face. He was yet to lose his temper, such was beneath him. But by the Throne was it close.

"I see clearance for a mount, but not an ogryn. Can you ride an ogryn, Vince?" a corporal slid a mess of papers across the bench to his comrade, "I mean we wouldn't want to do something wrong, now, would we?"
The other shook his head, "Not with all the heightened security lately, you know after that patrol went wrong and we lost the wall."

Just beyond was the tantalising sight of open terrain, such as it was.
The half mile closest to base had been long since cleared, but beyond that, flattened cityscape was beginning to be gradually reclaimed by fauna, a slow creep of grasses and vines across rubble and shorn pieces of architecture.
And beyond that, their objective. The Lieutenant ground his teeth and waited.

It had taken some work, but she had finally gotten the cloak to lie comfortably when Winston showed himself. She watched Levi talk with his companion and when he gave his permission for the large lizard to stay she reached out her hand hand gave the large creature a friendly petting. It had been quite some time since she first got to know the creature and she was starting to be rather fond of the beast.

The major seemed pleased at having him tag along, though she wondered how they'd manage to get him out of the sewers by the time they reached the enemy camp. Still... it'd be good to have Winston along in case they'd meet some sewer-mutants down there. That was a thing, right? She was sure she'd heard about other guardsmen talk about sewer-mutants. Well... underhive mutants anyways... but that was basically the same thing, right? That might not have been on this planet though. Though it was probably a better idea to assume there would be sewer mutants than assume there wouldn't be.

As they passed by the gate she waved at some of her compatriots, smiling at them and exchanging the odd greeting. Still, she made a point not to tarry though. Keeping pace with the group so she wouldn't get the major or the sergeant to yell at her. As they left the party behind she looked at the ruined cityscape ahead of her, taking a deep breath as they left the safety behind.

Mordred had remained quiet, listening to the plan, taking in the details. This would be an interesting operation, as he remembered his reprimands from Holt. Excessive and fatal disciplinary measures. He was not to discipline anyone without Brintons orders. Well it would be a way to better understand other regiments. He looked around, and noticed that the Ogryn was still following him. He looked over his shoulder, frowning at the large abhuman but saying nothing about it. He'd seen enraged Ogryns rip Carver wolves in half before, and decided that unless it was an issue not to bother Dug. As the cadians delayed the group, the knight started to grow restless along side Brinton.

Who says the future has to be grimdark? Matt Ward that's who.

Between the two sulking officers was the looming giant that was dug. He had his pack next to him and was calmly going threw the items on a small laminated list of images. the first image was that of a auto cannon:Gun? he heaved the large weapon with one hand. and gave a small nod "check...." he murmured to himself next was his boots: were they tied? yes. Then his helmet and dust mask: were they on his side right now? He patted it and nodded "check" What about flack armor? he thumped it twice. Muttering quietly to not disturb the good officers he went threw his list looking at the pictures on them.

The last thing on his list was a image of the ammo drums used for the weapon. His brow furrowed as he thought. He was so posed to have a number of them. He pushed his thumb into the fingers as he tried to think of what number it was in the pile. It was more than one. He knew one. He then saw the image of a human next to it. AH. He was so posed to ask for help on this. Eventually he would have send a meaty finger into the shoulder of an officer but who? Officer Notahcommissar....Mordred or Officer he was told to fallow.....one of the two were anyways.... He decided to chose the other one who patted him. Officer Brinton and would rather gently tap his shoulder before asking "Scuse me Suh. How many is this?" he asked as he moving his other hand a towards the three ammo drums on the ground neatly next to his pack.

As much as he enjoy the sight to Brinton getting upset, Paxton was also inpatient. The battle awaited in the open grounds beyond and the sooner they get out there, the sooner the pompous twat could meet with his impending accident.

Slinging his lasgun, the nco moved up to the corporal to have a quiet word with him. "Hey, friend. As much as I am enjoying this, we do actually need to get out there or we're going to be late. You see, we have a tana party with some rebels relate to when the wall fell over and we really wouldn't want to miss that. Now would we? Tell you what, you let us through and I'll leave my flask for when you two get off duty. Sound fair?".

"you mean my homeworld doesn't hold a monopoly on man-eating reptiles?" levi remarked at savin in a friendly banter type of tone "well this shatters my whole universe" his attention quickly turned back to his mount who's inclusion keegan seemed find rather amusing if the laughter was any indication. either way the deathworlder was thankful the major was in a good mood.

"yes on both counts" he answered the majors questions about whether he could bite through tau bodyarmour or dig "only thing he can't do is fly" winston for his part licked his teeth at the sound of food being offered as he advanced with the group, clearly liking the attention sent his way while levi focused on the new information disclosed by keegan as they moved towards the gate. the idea of using the sewer network as a vector appealed highly to the corporal "sewers eh? nice, after this the damn sods will be terrified of even going near a privy, let alone use one"

as they passed through the gate levi put on his game face "come on" he muttered to savin as he walked past her and keegan, checking that his cloak covered most of everything as he darted ahead "last one to report back is a corpse starch ration"

Gabby frowned but nodded. This was exactly what she feared.

“That’s why we’re here. Get some goodwill back while getting some vengeance,” she answered.

She made a mental note to gather a crew to ‘persuade’ some suppliers after this.

It was at this time that the Major spoke up again, illustrating his plan with the addition that they were going in through the sewer. Sewers. Gabby kept a straight face. No one wants to go through the sewers but Gabby can say she’s been in worse. Naris didn’t seem like the place that would have Chem-Sharks. At least she will have a respirator this time around. As Keegan moved out Gabby gave a hand signal for them to form up around him. With Merovech issued lasgun in hand, every few steps she would turn around, walking backwards, to make sure people keeping up before spinning to walk forward again. The waves and nods from the Cadians didn’t go unnoticed but Gabby didn’t care. She knew they weren’t for her. She had a job to do.
Apparently, I made too many characters. Here they are:

Good god. What was that, and why was it wearing so much red?

To say the Color Sergeant's attire confused Wolf was an understatement. But the man's actions . . . Those made a great deal more sense.

Taking a page from the less vocal members of the Death Korps, the lanky Grenadier let his presence speak more than any words.

Settling into position behind the Praetorian Color Sergeant, the battered Grenadier took a deep breath, causing his aged helmet's respirator to produce a loud and lengthy "Schiiiiiick" as he casually held his lasgun.

The weapon was old, obviously. The wooden stock having seen better days, like most of his gear. The barrel, though. The barrel gleamed with lethal intent, pointed just at the feet of the Cadians, with the not so subtle indication that it could be raised swiftly higher should they argue with the Color Sergeant.

((Rolled clever to try and be quietly imposing/aid the Color Sergeant's point. Rolled a -1 +3 stat for a total of 2))

He was about to intervene, to gut that shithead in front of the entire gate as befits treatment of a shithead NCO but as it was too late and they got through. As they were leaving he gave a solemn nod to the Cadian Sergeant, giving off the message of 'Yes, we have to live with that guy'.

Now the kid's running! Why must they be running? They will arrive exhausted to the staging ground and less able to fight. Montgomery inhaled and exhaled fast, running is a young man's game as they always said and he was ancient by imperial guard standards for meatshields. He is not made for cross country, Sergeant Majors are natural sprinters, Very Dangerous over short distances

The nearest Unseen Son studied Cat as the commissar's eyes scanned the street rubble, "Don't suppose you remember me, sir." he leaned in and murmured.
Cat nodded without looking up, "You tried to hijack a truck from under Lieutenant Neskovich. Ballsy."
The guardman smiled, it wasn't a reassuring smile, but the commissar wasn't looking, "You broke my nose."
"Any time." Yorke shrugged turned away, not paying attention to the conversation as he listened for the sound of trickling water.

He paced along, following the faint echo beneath the street, difficult this high above the level of the sewers. They needed to drop down lower, like Keegan suggested.
Done searching the street and side alley, Cat and the three Unseen Sons slunk into the ruins of an old archway cafe, vanishing from sight as they headed below. Dropping to silence once more, the street was serene for a few moments.
