When the Commissar said something about one of them buying drinks Victoria rolled her icy blue eyes. He then mentioned something about adding straps in the back. "They come like this, but, maybe," she said then looked forward as her thoughts became occupied with how they would add seatbelts.

Then she heard yelling in the back. The Lieutenant looked back to see the Kasrkin medic was yelling after the scouts. She gave a disapproving frown as he muttered about making sure they stay healthy. "I'm sure they are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves, but if keep your voice down they and everyone else will be much safer," she scolded quietly at him before turning to the front to Phelan.

"Okay guide, how much further?" She asked.

Their local guide swung his gaze along the countryside yet again, doing a few moments of mental math as he took note of the local landmarks. Finally he ducked his head to the Lieutenant, "Emperor willing, about an hour's travel more." He responded politely, the words sounding sure and full of belief.

Of course it was always a half-truth. They were indeed roughly an hour away from their destination, if they didn't run into any impediments. No, the lie came from the invocation of the Emperor. A figure in whom----had he lost faith? That was a rich question, full of imaginative answers. But at least they sounded sincere, and for those others in the truck, they likely still had faith in the Emperor. The momentary pang of guilt at the utterance was gone as quickly as it came, leaving only a sort of weary peace in its stead.

Turns out that driving on a narrow and poorly kept road with a very heavy and long truck and relatively high speeds is not that easy, so it took pretty much all of Tabitha's attention to manouver through the back street. Every now and then she slowed down briefly to listen to Phelan's instructions and to figure out how to drive through the next bit of the road.
Hearing about the trap from Levi put a frown on her face. Why would anyone trap the road? Wasn't the whole point of them taking this route that noone would have guessed them doing so? Perhaps it wasn't for them them? Just anyone driving on the road? Or perhaps it wasn't as much a trap as a quick means of barricading the road? She supposed the latter wasn't too unlikely actually. With all the gangs, tau and even them, it wasn't too strange if the people didn't want the fighting on their home street, even if they were loyal.

Finally they exited the backstreet and the young cadian exhaled and let her shoulder sink, it'd be good driving in more open space for a little bit. The commissar spoke behind her and a chill went down her spine. Had she been driving too fast? She had thought they had seatbelts back there. Of course she had tried to be careful, considering they had passengers on the flatbed behind them. But hearing that she wondered if she might just have tossed someone off. Just about to open her mouth and apologise when commissar Yorke complimented her driving. Perhaps not then.

"Thank you sir, sorry if it got a little bumpy there."

Following the morale officers gaze towards the treeline she nodded to his sentiment.

"Let's hope. Even if the ground is mostly frozen, you never know how much weight it'll support."

Jaren's shout after Levi and Savin startled her a little, and like the others in the cab she cast a glance in his direction. But once he explained his reason she smiled warmly as she turned back to the wheel. It was charming really, him trying to make sure the scouts cared for themselves and stayed warm and dry.

The truck shifted slightly as Winston and Levi departed, though if it made any difference to the maneuvering, it was scarcely noticeable over the heaving and churning from the horrendous terrain under the wheels.
In the back, supplies jolted against their strapping, dog and medic bounced around, and the predominant sound was that of vehicular suspension in pain as it thundered along slowly.

In the front, Commissar Yorke nodded at Phelan's response, "Less than ten miles. But it could be ten miles of this, and this is one of the better roads."
As the scouts disappeared almost peacefully into the forest, the remaining group were left staring longingly after them, between thuds and bone shaking bangs from the transport.

Savin easily managed to reach the treeline unnoticed, and whilst there were no signs of other transport having headed through today, something felt distinctly strange. Well tuned senses and intuition lead the Ratling to feel distinctly uneasy, worsening the further she ventured. After a few long minutes, and being welk clear of the thundering clunking truck, the reason becomes obvious.
The forest is absolutely silent, still as the grave.

Once Levi and Winston were also at rest, the same became apparent to the corporal. The silence surrounding the area was unusual. Familiar to both Savin and Slone perhaps, was the kind of wildlife silence reserved for large predators passing somewhere through the woodland.

"I never got to thank you." Cat managed between his teeth rattling in his head, and looked over at Lieutenant Neskovich, "You brought over some stuff when I was in the Medicae. I didn't expect that." he steadied himself against the seat in front, returning his eyes to the road, "I mean, I didn't exactly expect being shot, but I really didn't expect anyone to even be speaking to me, never mind sending rations. Not after what-"
A loud clang covered the commissar and the Lieutenant both being jolted into the back of the seats in front of them as the truck thudded in and out of a ditch.
"...thank you." Yorke still didn't look anywhere but the road, his expression somewhat odd. Uncertain, possibly.

*

Finally, the truck passes from the frozen churned up track to a more forgiving rough road. Progress is slow, holes are large and deep, but the ride is no longer painful.
Reaching the trees, there is a long, narrow channel running down the centre of the track, beneath the truck, perhaps a drainage stream in warmer weather.
After about half a mile, the channel is flowing thinly with a muddy liquid, perhaps from a thaw, or draining from a swamp. Right now it simply provides yet another thing to avoid driving into, along with snow mounds, ice patches and fallen logs.

Light passes easily onto the track, but tree cover is dense. You cannot see more than a few metres into the woods themselves, shadows are thick, and undergrowth is unforgiving. The trees grow thicker still, and banks begin to form, raising the level of the woodland around the track itself.

Barely audible above the engine, is a soft thud and then clanging, metallic sound on the roof of the cab. Another projectile lands on the fabric of the cover, leaving a small, heavy indentation in the cloth, visible from below.
After a few moments, the cloth begins to smoke. And then very rapidly, flames start to lick the canvas, and the glass bottle drops, shattering, splashing sticky fuel onto the bed of the truck, narrowly missing Jaren and Hondjie, but covering seats, and spreading quickly.

A long, piercing whistle sounds in the woods, and looking at the road, flames are racing towards the truck, along the ditch, eating the fuel flowing down the channel.

Round 3: It's really not your day.

Turn start!
- You may make one Prime Action and one Sub action per turn. One roll per action.
- You may wait and post them separately. For example if you wish to fire upon an enemy and then drag your buddy away after he has fired too, you could wait for his post.
- These lists are not all encompassing, and not meant to get in the way of a good story. If you think you have a case for fitting in more activities, drop into vox or discord and holla at me.

Prime Action examples:
- Attack & Movement (Cross small room and fire, lean and shoot, etc)
- Large movement (dismount and run, run and climb, etc)
- Negotiation (Speech that requires a roll)
- Two handed complex actions (driving difficult terrain, disabling an explosive, wrestling, etc)

Sub action/reaction examples:
- Dodging (parrying, fucking down out of range, avoiding fire, etc.)
- Replying to negotiation (opposing)
- Supplementing negotiation (assist)
- Moving an unconscious or disabled character.

Free Actions:
- Speech
- Short movement (opening a door, leaving a room, etc)
- Moving another cooperative character (running, dragging, etc)

Savin's head snaps up and she listens in the eerie silence following the whistle. "That weren't no swamp owl..." she murmurs to herself. Then the sharp scent of burning promethium hits her nose and she breaks into a quick trot, keeping low and quiet, her longlas held tight to her chest.
((Large movement, run/run stealthy. Edit: roll -3 sneaky +2 for a total of -1. Ouch. The chameleoline will help hide her from sight, but i don't know what the bonus for that should be))
The ground is cold and unyielding, and every twig and leaf seems to snap under her feet. Savin picks up the pace, prioritizing speed over stealth at this point. ++What's goin' on y'all? That whistling one've ours?++

As the glass impacted with the bed of the truck, Hondjie scrambled out from under the bench, alarmed.
Not having much experience with fire, the dog judged this to be incredibly bad, and wasn’t far wrong.
Smelling the fuel mixed with the smoke and burning seating, Hondjie began barking loudly at the acrid air, confused and worried by the heat and flames.

The moving room was no longer a safe place to be, and the new friend human was definitely worth protecting. Barking at the hot thing hadn’t seemed to work. Touching it was a definite No.
So that left leaving the moving room.

Hondjie gripped Jaren’s waist strapping in determined foggy teeth, and pulled the Kasrkin urgently towards the open exit. Whining and heaving, the dog brought Jaren to the step before releasing, and jumping clear. A mess of limbs and snow were thrown up as Hondjie landed and rolled along the track for a few moments, before springing up and continuing to bark for all the dog was worth.

As the smoke had begun to start forming on the roof, Jaren turned to the cabin."Um Sir, I think there something on the roo-." Before he finished, the Molotov fell through the canvas and shattered on the floor. Fire and smoke quickly filled the small space, and Jaren instinctively covered his face. The heat rolled over him, and he heard barking close by, and he peered through his fingers to see the fire quickly growing.

He panicked trying to think of a way to stop it. There might be a fire extinguisher in the front, but it might not, or he could try and smack it out with a blanket or something. Looking at the roaring flames, he decided that was a poor idea. He didn't know what to do, his regiment started fires they didn't put them out! He suddenly felt something grab his belt and pull, and he found he was being lead out by Hondjie. As they reached the steps, the dog jumped and tumbled out in to the snow. Snow. That could work.

"Hondjie your a genius!" he yelled as he jumped down, doing a half somersault before pushing himself up. He then began to throw snow and mud on to the flame. Why he didn't know, but if the fire his the fuel they were going to walk back. Those that could walk at least.

slone could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up, it was far too quiet for his liking, everything screamed 'ambush' but he couldn't figure out where the ambushers were or when they'd attack

he didn't have to wait long for his suspicions to be confirmed

a long whistle pierced through the forest, levi's head snapped around as he tried to figure out the direction it came from, in the midst of this he could hear a dog barking, suppressing the urge to run slone ducked low and maneuvered forward though the forest canopy, working his way back towards the road and keeping an eye out for the ambushers, winston naturally followed suite, sniffing the air as they advanced.

as they got closer to the road he thought he caught a glimpse of flames but was unable to verify, but with that his mood darkened considerably

that guide is dead, gonna kill him myself once the job is done.

Stars above, today was likely going to get him shot.

Phelan grimaced as the ambush made itself apparent. Smoke already filling his nostrils. They'd set the back of the truck on fire, and it seemed the stream ahead was fuel, and not muddy water as he'd initially surmised. "Commissar," He called out, "I think I'll be taking a laspistol as soon as I can get one." A quick scan of the surrounding woods revealed little in the way of movement, but then that was the point, wasn't it?

The ambushers were close enough to throw a bottle, and if they were smart, they had the truck exits covered. But there was little for it, now. Their vehicle was on fire, and between burning to death and taking a lasgun or a pulseblast, he'd prefer the weapon any day. The book-seller slipped his hand down to the handle for the door, preparing to release it. "How do you want to do this?"

Savin almost collided into the back of a rather startled Gue'vesa, who was crouching at the side of the road, manning a portable vox set.
Caught by surprise, the man let out a yelp, and whipping around, tugged his headset from the vox, allowing Savin to hear... Jaren cursing at something? Clattering and Hondjie barking.

Scrambling to his feet, the Gue'vesa grabbed for his pistol, and fired blindly at the Ratling.

(( Rebel rolled a -2 to outsneak Savin, so somehow failed worse.
Then a -1 to aim and shoot. You need to best that. ))

Levi in comparison, managed to wind up a little way off the track as the flaming truck rolled past, in time to catch a second Gue'vesa completely off guard, still assumbling their pulse rifle and taking aim. Dark shapes passed nearby at speed, but whatever they were, they hadn't noticed Slone or Winston.

((No contesting roll yet, NPC will roll if attacked. ))

*

++ We're under attack. No casualties but the truck is on fire. Return but eyes open! ++ Cat answered the vox with a calm tone, for a man staring up at the glowing, red hot circle of metal above his head.

"Everyone. Out. Now. Get to the sides of the road and regroup."
Kicking the opposite door open, Cat patted Phelan firmly on the shoulder, and gave him an encouraging nod, "I suggest you roll." The snow banks were at least plenty deep.
"That means you too, Private Maru." there was hissing above them as the air began to react to the singing, hot metal, and Cat gestured to the door, "Out!"

((roll to avoid 0 +2 quick))
"Merde!" Savin falls on her ass and scrabbles backwards like a crab, the traitor's shots going over her head. She regains her feet and dodges toward the trees, snatching up her rifle from where it fell after the collision.
((roll to fuck him up 1 +1 forceful, total of 2))
She turns the dodge into a feint, and as the xeno-lover moves to pursue, she doubles back towards him, bringing up the solid wooden stock of her long-las to meet his chin.

The clang on the roof was immediately noticed by the driver: having just driven over uneven terrain, this was exactly the sort of thing she'd been listening for. But it came from the wrong direction. From the roof of the cab, rather than from the undercarriage. Furthermore, they shouldn't have hit any branches, they had cleared the last low-hanging one just moments ago. So either someone just threw a rock or maybe a...

The flames springing up behind them on the flatbed made the question moot. Whatever it was, it was bad. Most likely a grenade. Glancing ahead she saw the flames spreading quickly towards them along the igniting fuel line in the ditch. Her first instinct was to immediately shift gears and prepare to pull the truck out of the ditch. If it remained in that ditch, they'd have to walk the rest of the way.

It took the commissar's shout to rouse her from her attempts to spot a way to get the truck out of the ditch. Initially starting to protest:

"But sir, the truck will..."

Before she finished the sound of the hissing metal and the ring forming on the cab roof became all to appearant. Instead of finishing the sentence she dove to her side, loosening her seat belt and fishing up her pack with one hand and the carbine in the other. With a light kick she opened the cab door and then threw herself out to the side of the ditch, trying to stay above the flame. Upbringing and training (and more than a little adrenaline) kicking into full gear, she brought the carbine up and began sweeping the treeline for the ambushers.

An hour's travel? Well, it was an answer. Then the Commissar clarified that they were less than ten miles away. Victoria gave a nod then leaned back in her seat and looked out the window. After a little while, the Commissar spoke up again. He thanked her, in reference to when she came to his office with a bottle of rahzvod and a box of get well letters. She listened then a sudden jolt interrupted their conversation. The Department of Transportation XO braced a hand on the ceiling so she didn't bounce too much then resumed listening as if nothing happened. When he finished she replied. "It was a group effort. I was the one who gathered everything, delivered it, and bought the booze," she said.

---

As they traveled in the forest on arguably smoother roads, things remained uneventful until Victoria heard a light thud on the roof over the din of the truck. Dismissing it as a fallen pine cone or branch, she though nothing more of it until she heard a shattering of glass. She searched for the source and the sound of barking brought her attention to the back, which was quickly being eaten by flames. The Lieutenant’s first though was ambush, which she heard the Commissar start yelling, next to finding a fire extinguisher. Things will be bad if they have to travel on foot.

However, it quickly became apparent that they had to abandon it, punctuated by the Commissar’s order. As those in the front seat dove out Victoria got her plasma pistol ready. A few moments after Phelan got out the officer opened the door and hopped out after him, diving into a roll before the momentum brought her to her feet. She went to the closest tree for cover and scanned with her cold, angry blue eyes for their ambushers and Phelan.

++ Anyone seen who's hit us, over? ++ the Lieutenant said over vox.

seeing the truck ablaze levi's eyes briefly widened by the tiniest margin before relaxing as he saw tabs exit the vehicle, and then turned his attention to one of the ambushers near him, it was one of the rebel traitors and he was still getting his pulse rifle ready, and judging from movement in the periphery of his vision levi surmised that there were some more moving by.

giving winston a hand signal to go after the others, levi drew his knife and moved in the for kill, eyes narrowing on his chosen target

before the gue'vesa even knew what was happening slone moved to clamp his hand over the rebel's mouth and yank him backwards, intending to jam his knife into the traitor's back with the blade angled upwards

while this happened winston quietly stalked the dark shapes that had been pointed out to him, waiting for the right moment to strike

((Phelan is using forceful to hurl himself from the truck. rolled a -1 +2 from his stat for a total of 1))

Phelan judged the distance to the nearest snowbanks and realized he didn't have enough leverage to truly make it. But ---A tensing of muscle later he released the door mechanism and hurled himself away from the vehicle. Catching the cold ground and finding it to be not entirely frozen, but reasonable stable. Stable enough to act as a sort of spring-board to further propel him towards the nearest snowbank and some meager form of cover.

He slapped into the snow, half-expecting to run face-first into a hidden branch or log, but at least for the first few inches, nothing stabbed him.

The Gue'vesa firing at Savin stumbled back from the blow to his head, falling flat on his arse to the ground, still gripping his weapon in surprise.
"Devil child!" he spat, confused by the Ratling's impressive strength for her size.
(( Rolled a total of 0 ))

As Tabitha righted herself, a gap in the smoke would allow the young Cadian to see two crouching figures on the opposite bank, a little apart. One seemed thoroughly distracted by a certain Corporal Slone, whilst the other was unseen focused, and readying a shot at Lieutenant Neskovich as she got her bearings on the ground.
(( Their Sneaky of 1 did not beat Tabs' spot check.
A roll of 2 or above from Tabitha will hit the rebel unless they succeed in dodging. The rest of you have not seen this enemy.))

Neskovich however could see two dark shapes closer to home, racing quickly through the undergrowth with an almost animalistic speed, heading toward both herself and Phelan.
(( A roll of 2 or above from Neskovich to attempt to hit the blurry enemies. ))

Meanwhile the rebel surprised by Levi fumbled with his weapon, gripping the rifle against the stump he'd been using to set up the shot, and resisting being pulled off balance and, headbutting violently towards back Levi in return. While the corporal's knife left it's mark, the struggle caused it to miss it's original target, striking something less lethal.
(( Rebel rolled a total of 3 to dodge, which while not quite enough to get away, is close enough to survive the round. ))

The shapes whisk past Winston for now, but seem to be heading around the group, perhaps attempting to cross the road.

Satisfied that everyone else cleared out of the vehicle, Commissar Yorke quickly checked the seats for anything vital; dataslates, maps or weapons. Finding nothing, he cast one last fascinated glance at the cab ceiling, the insulation now blackening and bubbling.
It would be so simple to let it just collapse. Quick, too.
Pausing for somewhat longer than he should, Cat remembered his duty, and finally hauled himself out of the door.

Landing in the snow with little grace and too many limbs, the commissar rolled and righted himself after a moment, hat and dataslate lay in the snowbank, forgotten for now.
Immediately, he bolted to the nearest evacuee, Tabitha, and crouched to meet her height, drawing his own weapons, "What do you see?" he coughed.
Across the flaming channel Cat could just about catch sight of Neskovich and Phelan, the thick oily smoke from the burning fuel providing some cover.

"Phelan! Heads up!" a thud in the snow beside the bookseller signalled the arrival of his weapon; whilst not anyone's personal pistol, an officer's laspistol slung in a shoulder a holster nonetheless.

Despite the effort from Jaren, the flames were still being fed by sticky fuel, and the fabric truck cover was beginning to fold inwards, the support and taut canvas being rapidly consumed by the fire above.
Thankfully, the reserve fuel tanks and cases of supplies seemed to be well sealed and insulated against the flames for now. Not so much the padded seats, nor the wooden duckboards roped at the back of the truck bed.
(( Jaren and Phelan can attempt more fire duties or try to fire at one of the enemies. ))

However the front of the truck fared less well. Yorke turned his head to gaze at the roof of the cab, through the smoke, the white hot glow of some object clamped to the roof was still evident. He watched, as after a few seconds, with a disturbingly soft whoomph sound, the roof of the cab melted down into the seating area, glass and metal tinkling and crackling as extreme temperatures met.

Cat stared distractedly, blinking his eyes hard from the after images, and stepping back further towards the treeline.
With a hiss, he found himself a new friend, as an armed Kroot dropped beside the commissar, staff-rifle already raised to strike.
"The fuck is this?" was not a warcry for the books, as Yorke met the bladed staff with his power-sword, and momentarily pushed back what was apparently the only biped on Naris taller than himself.

Clicking its beak, the kroot hunter's eyes seemed almost amused at the commissar's tenacity, before lunging again, Cat meeting its efforts with further blocks, waiting to get his strikes in return.

Phelan snatched the holster and pistol out of the air, grateful for the protection it offered, even as he realized the full extent of their truck's damage. Caught between two shapes dashing for he and the Lieutenant, he made a swift choice with a growl. "Lieutenant, you're a better shot than I. Cover me while I try to stop our truck from burning?"

((Phelan rolled a clever roll of 0 +3 from his stat for a total of 3))

He dashed back for the truck, keeping an ear out for the Lieutenant's response even as he did. His mind racing with variables as he considered how to put out the fire as speedily as possible. A solution of a sort presented itself, even if it wasn't the best one necessarily. Snow and water would likely do little, but if they could smother it with something, they might be able to prevent the fire from gaining any more of a foothold.

What had the Cadian's name been? Jaren? "Jaren!" He called out, pointing at the canvas tarp. "Cut it down, we can smother the fire with the tarp." He immediately clambered up the side of the transport, working his fingers in under the canvas and finding the fastenings that held it tight. Undoing them as speedily as he could, pushing the canvas inwards and trying to get enough of it free to do as he'd suggested and smother the fire in the back of the vehicle.

Levi snarled as the rebel tried to headbutt him, responding with a heatbutt of his own before biting onto the other mans ear and tightening his grip on his combatant

pulling the blade out he stabbed the traitor again, and again and again in quick succession, plunging the knife in deep as he could before twisting and pulling it back each time "stop struggling!" he hissed out through his teeth as they remained clamped on the other guy's ear

Victoria saw that Phelan was okay was indeed alive before seeing that two shapes were coming at the both of them. Then the civilian had the gall to issue her, an officer, orders. He didn't wait for a confirmation either as he ran away. хуй тебе за щеку! She turned back to the enemy and couldn't quite identify them from this dense forest, but they were indeed a threat and the Valhallan decided to handle it by her most favored method: the blade. Pulling out her Power Sword and activating it so it was sheathed in a blue power field, the Lieutenant stepped out of her cover and, letting out a mighty warcry, charged! There was a certain protection fighting in melee, for few wanted to fire into one in case they might hit their ally. She also hoped her roar would draw both of the attackers toward her.

Barely pausing her momentum, the ratling charges forward, plunging through the woods towards the truck. She stops at the edge of the road, covering in a thicket of frozen brambles under her chameleoline, to scan the scene of battle unfolding through her scope and pick a target.
((Savin is coming back from ahead, so I believe she'll be able to see Neskovich, Tabitha, and Cat. Also I'm aware that I'm moving on without waiting to see if I actually hit my gue'vassa, call it savin's overconfidence.))
