I had the idea for this thread for quite a while.

Open RP Threads, by their nature, are not flexible things: Some Characters play out in an important scene and due to unfortunate (And very Understandable) inability of the players to participate the whole thread gets stuck for other players who want to use that geographical location too, since the Scene may be critically important for some of the characters it needs to reach a natural conclusion and thus the thread cannot be reset and opened up again.

To resolve the conundrum, I have created a Compromise of sorts: A Single thread centred around an evolving idea - A Character Arc.
This Thread will be used when a reasonable amount of time has passed for an open RP Thread to continue but did not do so and a reset is inapplicable, in such case the RP featuring the Involved Characters and location will be happening here.

Don't misunderstand: I have the patience to wait for others like any other, and would absolutely prefer the RP of the characters happening in the relevant thread, but such things are simply impossible in some cases when an over-abundance of events need to happen for them to reach a natural conclusion as well as they do build one upon the other for the character arc make any sense.

levi had gotten the answer he had suspected, looking back at verena the corporal gave an 'i told you so' glance "see. this is exactly what i'm talking about when i say that 'the krieg way of doing things' is why she is in this mess, you can't just lock that stuff away in your head, in there it just festers like an open wound, i speak from experience."

LaxKnight wrote:Verena gave the Prometheron only a glance but then Erika decided to answer him. Krieg must not display weakness. Krieg can not afford to be weak in the face of His enemies. Only the strong had any hope of achieving redemption. Weakness could only bring further shame.

The Corporal seemed to take this as a minor victory of some sort as he declare it was “The Krieg way of things” that did this to her. The blonde’s eyebrows furrowed.

“Krieg are trained to withstand trauma typically experienced on the battlefield. Quite frankly Corporal, if this stemmed from ‘our way of things’ then she wouldn’t have passed training,” Verena’s expression softened as she looked back to Erika. She wasn’t quite sure what to do. She was a communications specialist, not a Commissar. Erika clearly was experiencing some sort of crisis. But what? And why? She can’t fix something if she didn’t know what the problem was.

“Erika, we can’t help unless we know what the weakness is,” she said, “Perhaps we can turn it into a strength?”

The Woman did not take Levi's smugness well. In fact, so much of it was not taken, the response fuelled by the steadily growing frustration, was befitting one whose entire way of life up until this very point was attempted to be ridiculed over a single thing. Erika's Eyes narrowed with resentment that until now was barely concealed but rapidly unravelling.

"Vat Experience?" Her tone, previously still reeling from the breakdown and tears, grew cold with contempt.
"Zat 'stuff' in my headt' must never leave it, You know vat I mean!" The last part was delivered with a sudden turn to Verena. Separated by a few years and not part of the same batch or group, Erika's 'Troubles' were widely known at least to the levels of passing event or rumour among the 945th, some of those 'Troubles' were used as Examples where deemed applicable -Especially the 'Last Chance Test'. None of which the members of the Regiment were allowed to speak of.

"How kann you kompare your experience to mine? If vone variable vas changed, I vouldn't be here, I vould be terminatedt More times than there are shtars undter His Rule!" The edible material in her hand crumbled in a clenched fist. "Ze 'Krieg Vay ofv things' has nothing to do vith it." Her voice once again lowered, uttered through the closed teeth. Maybe Conviction, maybe Self- Justification, even she didn't truly know at this point.

"breaking someone in advance is not training them to withstand battlefield trauma" levi snapped back at verena, starting to get a little frustrated, and then erika chimed in with her denial of the source of the problem. it was like trying to talk to a pair of malfunctioning servitors, the corporal thought to himself as he looked at the empty bottle he was still holding before smashing it against the wall.

CRASH

"wrong." he replied bluntly, his voice low "it has everything to do with it. you're just in denial" he pointed the broken bottle at the pair, ignoring how the glass was cutting into his hand

"you wanna know my experience? try being born and raised on a deathworld, and then doing this shite as a guardsman for more than ten. frakking. years, six of them spent on the Spinward front. I've been dodging bullets and lasbolts, avoiding being torn apart and eaten, having to kill more than a few wounded buddies so their mewling wouldn't alert an enemy sentry, getting caught up in artillery barrages from allied regiments and making suicidal charges against enemy positions for longer than both of you put together, i know what i'm talking about."

Verena did what she’s been trained to do: listen, process, then choose how to act. Erika went off a little bit on her but mainly at Levi, saying he can’t know her experience and said the ‘Krieg way of things’ isn’t to blame. Verena had to agree, she doubted anyone did what the Krieg do at least in regards to training.

However, the Prometheron disagreed, emphasized by breaking his bottle. He claimed they were in denial and went off about his experience. His last statement about how he had more experience than both of them combined made her brow furrow. If his claim of being in the service ten years was true then his statement was factually wrong. The Krieg were bred for war. If it wasn’t for her training in dealing with non-Krieg she wouldn’t have recognized his feats as impressive. They weren’t horrific feats and tales to the Krieg; they were expectations. In her anger, she couldn’t but wonder how he was so ignorant. Didn’t he know Krieg was a Death World? Hasn’t he heard the tales of how they would willingly call barrages on top of themselves? How every Krieg wished to sacrifice their life to repent for an ancient sin? That killing wounded men was what was part of the Quartermaster's job? She has witnessed, if not done, all of these things.

Verena took a small breath and blinked her expression back to her default. She listened; now was time to process. Right now she was dealing with a comrade who was suffering some sort of mental trauma and a very angry Prometheron who had an improvised weapon in his hand. As much as she wanted to tell him he was wrong and pointing out his ignorance would only escalate the situation. She gathered her words before saying, “Not to discount your experience, but it seems to me that in that experience you haven’t dealt with Krieg until this deployment. We were bred for war. We started training on a Death World before Cadians are expected to field strip a lasgun. We know war, Corporal, because that’s all we know.”

She paused. There was so much she couldn’t tell. She had to be careful.

“You spoke earlier about how all the Krieg taught us is how to suffer and die. As I said, that isn’t all they teach us but we know these things very, very well. If Erika couldn’t handle it, she wouldn’t be here. We know how to deal with war, but one thing they didn’t teach most of us is how to deal with people. I’ve been trained to as well as someone who’s known nothing but war could, but Erika?” she looked over at her, “She has not. She’s learning on her own accord and I suspect she’s suffering for it. Am I close, Erika?”

The loud shattering of glass put the Kriegerin on edge, combat mentality slowly creeping into her consciousness and actions. Pupils dilating and constricting at the sight of the broken bottle, fingers digging into the ground in preparation for a fistfight, eyes narrowing, tense and ready.
The Kreigerin's frustration stewed even further: Are those so called 'Experiences' all he has to share on the matter? Was the training period of the 945th Regiment not full of dodging bullets and lasbolts? Not full of Black on Black Artillery barrages simulating incompetent non-krieg allies, or any other simulation of uncooperative battlefield conditions? Those things were expected of every single trooper to endure, not anything out of the Ordinary to complain about.
Slone can loudspeak however he likes, on the planet he forgot is a Death World no worse than his own, such behaviour would put a bullet in his skull, So much for individual pride.

Verena's careful interjection shifted Erika's attention if ever so slightly.
"Yes" she hissed through clenched teeth.

slone let out a groan and brought his other hand up to his head and proceeded to do a facepalm, letting out a long sigh in the process "in the name of saint macharius'es butthole, are you seriously that bloody dense?" he muttered quietly, his frustration giving way to exhaustion as he lowered his arm holding the bottle shards

"every, single, member of the imperial guard is bred for war, thats the point i was trying to make. my regiment is bred for war, the cadians are bred for war, the valhallans are bred for war, the catachans, the steel legion, mordians, tallarn, attilians, elysians, praetorians, chem dogs, even the damned second sons and unseen sons are bred for war, you are not special in that regard nor are you the only ones who have frakked up and have to pay off a debt to the emperor, case in point: The Vostroyans." like verena he fell into silence, more to catch his breath and regain his composure, suppressing the urge to roll his eyes when the krieger manage to say what the issue was and then proceed to miss the point again without even noticing.

"so close and yet so far, you know only one part of war, the rest of it you're half-assing and doing all wrong, wanna know why? because the bit you still don't get is that a significant part of dealing with war involves dealing with people. Any mug can hold a lasgun and die for the emperor, but figuring out what to do with refugee columns and people who've lost their homes and livelihoods? that takes actual skill. And because the krieg didn't train her and many others on how to deal with people she is now in this mess of having to figure it out on her own with nothing to go on, that is what i mean when i say the krieg way of doing things has done this to her, because they've only taught you half of what you need to know."

a second time he trailed off as erika gave her response, taking a moment to collect his thoughts "so we're all on the same page now? good. now, i can help you, but in order for that happen you're going to need to acknowledge that the way the korps has taught you hasn't exactly been helpful, alright?"

The Prometheron called her dense before going on how about how every Guardsmen was bred for war and they weren’t the only ones trying to pay an ancient debt. He then went on talking about how the Krieg failed them because dealing with people was a significant part of war and because they didn’t learn that ‘their way of things’ did this to her. Progress was made when Erika admitted this was a social thing. The Corporal offered to help if they admit that the way the Krieg taught them things hasn’t exactly been helpful.

Verena listened, now to process. Again, ignorance, but understandable in this case. Many Krieg but especially her unit was literally bred for war. Not all Cadians became Guardsmen, only every firstborn of Vostroyans had to become a Guardsmen, but every Krieg became a soldier. War was their sole purpose for Verena to exist. However, that isn’t something she was allowed to share. She could see his point in dealing with people can be a significant part of war and could slightly concede that. Slightly. Making decisions that he spoke of were up to officers, not common soldiers like Erika and herself. What he didn’t understand was that common Krieg soldiers weren’t meant to deal with people, they were meant to obey and die when required. The Krieg were made to be that ‘mug holding a lasgun’ so others didn’t have to. They weren't taught to deal with people because they weren't expected to and it was the duty of the officers and Commissars to in any case. They weren't expected to fight in mixed companies of Krieg and non-Krieg. That was the problem: they were taught exactly what they needed to know and nothing more.

As much as she wanted to answer, Verena didn’t think this question was hers to answer. In this particular case, Verena was the exception instead of Erika. She’s been trained to deal with people and that training has been very helpful. Things here would have likely escalated if she hadn’t. However, she did need to bring up one thing.

“You’re bleeding,” she stated simply, “Let me help.”

Verena pulled out a first aid kit from one the pouches on her vox caster, waiting for his answer.

He doesn't understand, he doesn't understand, HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND!
For herself, Erika could care less. For Krieg, Erika could care less. For Levi's snide remarks and insufferable density, Erika could care less.
One thing Erika could not care less, The thing that deep down beneath is the only thing that truly matters in her brief and pitiful life:

The Cult of Sacrifice.
Those mortals who dared to refuse the Emperor's call for allegiance must pay their due in the same weight as their treachery: Infinite.

Something stirred behind the eyes of the Kriegerin, the eyes that in that short span of time changed to almost every extreme, changed yet again. This something was intense, burning, searing hot with hatred the rest of the face soon came to emulate, perhaps the only thing the Thing was allowed or could even experience.

What is a hand, but a mechanism of muscle and bone meant to cause harm to the Emperor's foe? What is a leg, but an instrument by which the distance to the Emperor's foe is reduced? What is a Heart, a Liver, a Lung or Kidney? Nothing but things that perpetuate the existence of the Flesh; the Pound of Flesh owed to the Emperor, Pound upon Pound upon Pound of Flesh every single living creature born on Krieg ever since St. Jurten and the Autocrats' Betrayal owes to the God Emperor of Man, starting with the death of the Planet by Thermonuclear Salvation. There are a lot more of Flesh Pounds until they reach Infinity.
No Krieger will ever bear Tattoos - for the skin is not theirs to mutilate, not their blood to pollute with Ink; Nothing on her - nothing *of* her belongs to the bearer of the imagined name 'Erika Hass'; the Blood, the Flesh, the Bones and the Soul - All belong to Him on Terra, and He will receive it all, that much is guaranteed.

"This is not your Shame to Doubt."
The creature wearing the Woman's Flesh slowly growled with poison, holding by its last threads from ending this conversation right here and now, stopped from continuing by the sudden intervention of the snow clutched in her hands - applied with high velocity to the face.
Erika took a deep breath, paused and finally regained control. She shook her head, sending ice from her hair for Emperor knows what time already.
"You sawv nothing." she said with an even voice, eyes levelled straight at Levi's own. "You vill not tell anyone of zis... lapse."
She sighed and centred herself again, trying to approach from a calmer direction "Vat I need to know to perform my funkzion, I know. Units zat haffe different funkzions knowv different things, inkluding vat you shtated. Kann you fix a Leman Russ Main Battle Tank? Neizer kann I. If I didn't fit ze rekvirements, I vouldt eizer have a different funkzion or I vould be dead, vith much higher chances on ze latter. I am... Authorizedt to learn in additzion to my funkzion due to a... Konditzion but zat iz all I kann discuss on it."

She took a quick bite of snow, wherein she held it in her mouth for a few seconds and swallowed to wet the dry throat.
"Howv kann you help me?"

there it is again, levi thought as the 'other' personality made itself known, but just as quickly as it revealed itself the second persona was gone as erika threw snow into her own face. the deathworlder was starting to wonder why he was even bothering to stick his neck out like this to begin with, it's not like they owed him anything and it would be far easier to just leave and go back to keeping every single krieger at arms length, but the damned improving regimental relations strategy holt was so insistent on having kept rearing its ugly head, so engrossed was he in this internal conumdrum he didn't completely hear what verena had said.

"huh..what? don't change the subject" he replied, waving said bleeding hand dismissively before looking at it for a minute and reconsidering "tch, fine.." moving his hand over so it could be worked on slone sat in silence as erika gave a more substantial reply, it was like dealing with an obscura addict if he was being honest, refusing to admit flat out that they had a serious problem, but her at least asking how she could be helped was a start. still, he needed to change tack, the direct frontal assault approach wasn't working

"can i fix a leman russ? depends on what's broken, getting the engine running is easy enough. As to how i can help you that also depends, do you actually want help or are you just saying that to get me off your case? because if you aren't honest with yourself then there is no point trying, 'you can't teach someone who isn't willing to learn' as my drill sargeant was fond of saying."

As Verena waited for an answer Erika… changed. She knew Erika was always the exception but this was beyond that. This didn’t seem like the Erika she knew. It was almost like a different person. Then she hit herself with some snow and she was back to her ‘normal’ self. Verena has seen many things. Troops running into an artillery barrage, the last delusions of men before they were given the Emperor’s Peace, a Catachan working in the comms building, but this was by far one of the strangest. What did the Captain see in her?

It wasn’t her business; Erika was the exception. That’s all the explanation she needed.

The Prometheron seemed ready to rebuttal more but Verena’s question threw him off. Once he reluctantly gave permission she opened the medkit and gently grabbed his wrist so it wouldn’t move as he continued to talk to Erika. She pulled out some tweezers and started picking out glass pieces, the occasional light patter of one falling into the empty lid of the kit interjecting between their words. Verena knew about how to treat hand wounds well. They just had to take off her gloves to see.

Erika looked down. To admit anything about something wrong with the Death Korps Induction Programme would be completely unthinkable, she could never do that - not today, not tomorrow. However, she just admitted that the Training covered what was expected of her - what she needed to know, nothing of those social things which was perfectly fine and understandable.

But was it really the problem?
As far as she knew: no one, not a single remaining member of the 945th had her condition, not even those trained in interacting with non-Kriegers and their weird ideas had it. They may have understood non-Krieg Behaviour, yes but never experienced it. Perhaps this Freedom of Operation given by Unit One was meant exactly for that purpose? Even he doesn't can't help but maybe Unit Levi Slone can.

"Yes." She said, resolute. "Even if ze attempt rezults in failure, ze charge kannot be mistaken for kowvardice." The corners of Erika's mouth raised a little in an attempt to lighten up and cover the fragility of the control she just regained. The Woman wiped her eyes and face from melted snow and shuddered, registering the cold.
