The little pill box, if you could call it that, was just about done for the cadians, the three getting firing lines and cover all set up. Krast had taken his helmet off, sweat dripping down as the sun hit them. He sighed and looked around, looking at everyone else. Things seemed pretty good, especially now that the heavy stubbier and mortar pits were set up. He turned to his left, and frowned when he saw the kriegers nest, which was much better built. Damn, how did one beat their three?

“Alright looks good here.” Tross said, putting his tool down and sat on a sand bag. Around then the ration packs where given out, and the three quickly fell on to the poor ration packs. They sat down and talked, getting some food in before any thing happened.

That’s when their vox came to life, declaring three tau drones. Krast swore and grabbed his helmet and looked out.

++Copy, what’s their bearing?++

Who says the future has to be grimdark? Matt Ward that's who.

Flint would finish his prayer settling himself he looked to see a guards woman and man looking with abject terror at him as the man nugged a ration bar towards him with a stick. Then after a few awkward moments the woman then got closer and nugged it with her foot closer. This was just a day full of firsts apparently. And quite frankly. He was a little offended. He bent over and picked up the ration bar letting out a muffled "Thank you?" stuffing it into his own webbing before he stairs out with the amber glass. He was used to the swears and prayers. The mummers and the looks but that was a new low for him. With a sigh he let it go. Then the call was made and he had to get himself ready. With his staff in hand he began to refocus his mind. Ready to unleash the emperors flame.

At the request of a heading, Ana spoke over the vox, ++ Drones directly East, repeat directly East! It's three drones and they are splitting up, over. ++

"frakking knew it" marida snarled to herself as the call about enemy contact went out over the vox, unable to do much else as she still waited for her bionic to finish its reset process she looked at the scouts now climbing the water tower before directing her attention to the forest on their western flank

++check all sectors, the drones could just be a decoy++ she ordered

Lyashev’s warning kicks every guardswoman and -man into full activity. Up on the water tower Link starts frantically searching for the enemy with his magnoculars. Silas and Gregoric put their gastronomical bragging aside to get into the weapon nest with LaChance and “Tosca”. Up north Tross and Nevin got up against their sandbags, eyes like those of hawks scannning for prey. Thomas making room for the incomprehensible Geordie as he returned.

Perhaps it was the sudden activity in the camp but the drones, who had begun to spread out in all directions, quickly doves back into to cover. On the wind came the faint sound of activity and upset shouting, too distant to make out any words.
If there were any doubts left remaining they were now gone: the enemy was most definitely in the swamp and… there were more than a handful of them.

Marida’s scouts spread out along the southern and western perimeter, following their sergeant’s command to keep their eyes out for any incoming enemy in those directions. More so from the south than the west. The arcane sigils of the red priesthood danced in Marida’s vision as her bionic eye came alive once more.

To the north, the lieutenant slipped into the stubber nest with Geordie, #6732-D and Thomas and squinted down the road leading down from the ridge. Gesturing with his lho-stub as if to indicate the movement from the treeline up the road.

”When they get up the road, hold fire until they have crossed a few paces. Try to catch them in the open. If they’re already shooting or coming up with grenades, don’t wait just shoot them. “

Waiting just for a moment for a confirmation or questions he then headed across the ward over to where Krast, Tross and Nevin were sitting in cover.

”Krast! That stubber nest is what’s going to keep the enemy from coming up the road. You keep them firing. Understand?”

With that the lieutenant got into a jog southwards towards the centre of the hamlet, reaching for the vox bead in his ear as he moved sotuhwards.

++Becket. I need eyes on any and all potential flanking routes and an estimate how many of them there are.++

Over in the mortar pit, Montgomery hears the rather agitated voice of Link sitting up in the water tower. Next to him Briggs is actively making sure everything is within reach for when he needs it.

++Can’t make anything out yet, sarge. There’s activity in the trees but can’t see them yet. Drones dove back into the trees when we spotted them. ++

At that moment the lieutenant comes up to the mortar pit, kneeling down so that Montgomery can hear him properly without him having to raise him voice. Tossing him a set of keys as he spoke.

”Sergeant major. I don’t want anyone mentioning the supply depot on the vox, just in case the enemy is listening. Furthermore, under no circumstances can it be allowed to fall into enemy hands. I want it rigged to blow in case we’re forced to withdraw. I’m going to be up north to keep my eyes on what happens there. “

((You have the final moments of calm before all hell breaks loose. Anything you want to do before it happens?))

Private Tabitha Maru - Lieutenant Yudel Eckhardt

As Geordie came and left, 'Tosca' struggled to keep his eyes on his arcs. The guardsmen had left the hidden officer with a lot of questions that he had a desperate urge to get answered. Thankfully, the situation took priority.

As LaChance gave his quick orders and smoke grenades 'Tosca' was barely able to turn on his side to catch the items toss to him, juggling them for moment as the sergeant left. Placing the grenades at arms reach, he returned to manning the bolter. Watching the swamp, he mentally went over the orders again. 'Hold fire as long as possible. If compromised, pop smoke.'

Uncertain of whether he should continue to lay down fire or relocate, the Vostroyan prayed to the Emperor that he wouldn't get spotted first.

thank the emperor, she could see properly again

feeling reinvigorated, marida looked to corporal hughes "corporal. take some men, mines and a couple of flamers and go with lachance to the south west and south east corners of the orchard, hide yourselves throughout the plantation and if it looks like they're about to break through then set the entire thing alight."

as hughes left to gather men and munitions the sargeant pulled out some jerky to give to urz followed by hopping up into the saddle, readying her hunting lance ++copy that Leftenant, heading out now++

Ana swore once the drones disappeared. She would listen to the orders on the vox, searching for anything that would be relevant to her. The Lieutenant then appeared and ordered the Sergeant Major to say that no one mention the supply depot and rig it to blow so it doesn’t fall to the enemy. Ana wished that he would say any other name but the realist inside her knew that it would be too good to be true.

And she was right. Ana heard her name yelled and she couldn’t help but feel that her fate was sealed. She hung up the vox receiver to dash toward the back of the truck. With practiced speed, she got out the manual forklift, the board for the gear to go on (they weren’t super well supplied after all), and began piling explosives on it. Being that her regiment was a mix of engineers and drivers, she knew well enough how to handle explosives. They had to use them to clear glaciers after all. That being said, anyone watching her would probably be crapping bricks from how carelessly she tossed them on. She knew they weren’t going to explode on impact. She also had a bit of a deathwish.

By the time the Sergeant Major got there, Ana was done. He grabbed the cart and she ran behind to make sure nothing fell off. Once they got to the depot he grabbed an armful and went down, telling her to guard and offload. She held her lascarbine with one hand with the stock clamped in her armpit as she used the other to toss explosives off.

“Do you know how to set those, SMaj?” she called down after him. She doubted it.

Krast nodded, flipping his visor down and letting the the system seal, with a soft hiss of pressurized air. He lifted his hellgun in both hands glad he decided to bring it instead of the flamer right now.

“Understood sir. Trust me, that gun won’t stop firing under my watch, by Cadia and the Emperor.” He said, moving to his little bunker, tapping Nevin on the head. The younger trooper jumped a little, dropping he laspack in his hands before sighing in relief. Tross, the more veteran, turned and started chewing him out.

“Keep your ears open and your hands on your damn ammo!” He grumbled, setting his lasgun between to sand back, rubbing his graying mustache nervously.

“We got our orders boys. Keep the stubber firing, no matter what. Tross, they lose a man help them out, well cover your crossing.” The Kasrkin moved behind the two, scanning the tree line for movement, and throne was there movement. Moving in the hut, he set his gun through the window and started marking distance mentally. As he did, he said a prayer aloud to the Emperor.

“Blessed Emperor of Mankind, I offer my soul to you this day, should I fall. Holy Terra, I lay my life down for you so you may stand. Saints of old, guide my hand to slay the alien. Blessed by the soldier who gives all. Ave Imperium.”

North - 6732-D, Geordie, Krast

It’s to the north that things start happening first, probably due to the promise of the road leading up to the hamlet. At the treeline, at the very bottom of the slope, a few human figures appear out of the underbrush. Jumping into the cover provided by the raised dirt road cutting its way through the swampy ground as they carefully glanced upwards, a few brave souls taking a gamble and quickly trying to cross the road so they can hide on it’s other side.

Their kit seems to be assembled by whatever they had on hand: some of them having the distinctive flak armour favoured by the guard and the pdf supplemented by various bits of vile xenos equipment. Others were clearly wearing what originally was civilian clothing that’s been made into some sort of makeshift uniform. Some rank insignia sewn onto it, some webbing with equipment and some armour they must’ve picked up along the way. One of them, still staying in the treeline seem to be wearing the beige armour favoured by the T’au. No xenos visible yet, just traitors.

One of them makes some hand signals to the others, difficult to discern at this distance, and he and two more get into a crouch and begin to slowly moving up the slope. Staying off the road itself and instead opting to walk beside it. They’ll be able to do so for some 20-30 more meters before it’ll be so steep they’ll have to get onto the road itself. One of them shouts something indistinct back to their comrades and then turns in the direction of the hut reinforced with sandbags occupied by Krast, Tross and Nevin.

Geordie, having just returned from informing LaChance about the stubber nest they built, is welcomed back by the lieutenant who is standing behind one of the huts keeping an eye on the developing scene. He claps the guardsman on the shoulder and says to him in a low voice:
”Armstrong, tell the others not to mention the supply depot over the vox. Now, stay low and get to your weapon.”

South - LaChance, Becket, “Tosca”

”Sergeant LaChance! Sergeant Becket!”

Link leans down from his perch up on the watertower, yelling to the two ncos before they can no longer hear him. Not so loud that his voice would carry, but loud enough that the people around the water tower would hear.

”Ell-Tee says not to mention the thing we’re here for over the vox!”

Beneath him there’s full activity, with cpl Hughes and his scouts joining LaChance and Silas in the orchard with their mines and flamethrowers. Gregoric glances to “Tosca” as the other man says a quick prayer and glances down towards the treeline.

”Relax! Some quick shots with this beauty of yours and we’ll send the rabble running.”

Down there’s brief glimpses of silhouettes in the underbrush as the enemy gets closer to the ridge. They seem to avoid stepping out into open space between the treeline and the ridge for now. One woman with a grim expression and a shaved head is briefly visible as she scans the ridgeline from behind a tree, her eyes passing over the nest with the heavy stubber without pause or reaction. Both Tosca and Gregoric can see where the aquila used to sit on her sleeve, now torn away. Gregoric spits on the ground in disgust as he sees it.

Maybe three or four hundred meters further south “Tosca” notices a man run crouched out towards the outcropping. Seemingly trying to see if he can get up on the ridge without getting shot.

Central hamlet - Ana, Montgomery and Flint

The centre of the hamlet is full of activity, with a bunch of scouts running south with flamethrowers. One of them, corporal Hughes, stops for a moment and glances towards Flint for a moment.

”Hey spook. Flint, right? You know any tricks that’ll keep the enemy away? We could probably use you down south when they come that way.”

His comrade gives him a dirty look, as if the man had just eaten something straight off the ground or something, but says nothing.

Meanwhile in the basement of the house, Ana and Montgomery gets inside the supply depot. It’s an old food cellar with some big amasec casks still lying towards the end. Most other foodstuffs seems to be missing. In its place however are neat stacks with ammunition, a dozen barrels of promethium, spare parts for trucks and… fourteen crates of standard munitorum boots.

Montgomery didn't place the explosives yet, for it would take more to destroy the basement, he threw the plastic charges on the ground and unlocked the padlock.

His eyes scanned the room for what could be saved and was the most valuable.
Boots? Frak them, can be looted or repurposed from anywhere else.
Ammunition? Cathridges and metals can be recycled even with the shit tier tech of this warphole of a planet which leaves him with spare parts for trucks and the Promithium.
As far as he knew, Promithium can't be extracted from anywhere, they lost a massive stockpile due to the actions of a baby hangman and the best repaired trucks can't go nowhere without fuel.
Barrels it is then.

David faced one of the barrels, turned it on its side and rolled it over the floor to the stairs. Then, he did like many years have tought himto: Bent with the knees and kept the spine straight.

By the power of Proper Posture, LIFT!
0 +3(Powerful) =3 TOTAL

"Promithium." He simply said the the Valhallen and picked up more explosives to bring down. He repeated the proccess how much he was able.

That did not answer her question at all. Giving a frustrated sigh, Ana threw the last of the explosives onto the pile, wheeled the cart inside, and kept a lookout from inside the door and window; taking cover. Her lascarbine was at the ready, prepared to shoot anything that spoke about a Greater Good. What she would give for a drink right now.

her bionic started playing up again.

while that happening once could be written off as random, for it to happen twice for same reason got the sargeants attention, looking at urz as he started growling also had her concerned, for it was clearly borne of frustration given how he was constantly sniffing the air but seemingly failing to get any bearing.

slinking herself as low as she could while maintaining being in her saddle marida keyed the vox, keeping her hunting lance pointed ahead

++leftenant, these fraks have some active jamming going on, they're masking their scent pretty well too++ leaving it at that her hand slowly worked its way towards the grip of her laspistol while her attention moved to the outcrop where 'tosca' had spotted movement
